Motorists and taxi drivers clash on rank in Driffield



DISGRUNTLED cabbies are urging a tough crackdown on motorists who park illegally on taxi ranks in Driffield.

Private car owners are hampering the ability of taxi drivers to earn a living by taking up spaces on the three vehicle taxi rank outside the Tesco supermarket on George Street.

The East Riding of Yorkshire Council last week took over responsibility for parking enforcement from the police.

Now taxi drivers are hoping the authority will crack down on a problem which they claim has existed for several years at George Street and other ranks in the town.

Taxi drivers say motorists often become abusive when told they are parked illegally.

One cabby, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals, has compiled a selection of photographs which show private car owners parking on the rank at George Street.

“It is illegal to park on a taxi rank,” he said.

The problem appears to be worst on a Sunday when people appear to think it is okay to use taxi ranks as a car park or as a stop-off point while they use a cash point – which is not the case.

Nor is it permitted for disabled badge holders to leave vehicles on the ranks.

The taxi driver said that George Street provided a substantial amount of the income available to cabbies from ranks in the town.

Yet people often parked there even though there is a car park containing hundreds of spaces just metres away within the ground of the supermarket.

“When you challenge some people, you just get a lot of abuse,” he said. “But this is our living.”

ERYC became responsible for enforcing parking restrictions after Humberside Police took the decision to withdraw its traffic warden service.

Civil parking enforcement will be self-funded through the income generated from on-street parking and from enforcement action.

How many ranks in the UK are correctly marked I would hazard a guess at less than 50%

We worked hard to get our ranks in the town "legalised". Proper markings, signage etc. and what happened? The public still park on them with impunity. The police and traffic wardens are non existant more often than not. Still one got ticketed last Sat. night.

Which is maybe why no tickets are currently being issued.

The local trade need to get the council to ensure the rank is set out properly, and then ticket private cars to buggery.

Eventually they will get the message.

By edge of the carriageway I assume they mean up against the curb i.e. not placed a little away from it ?

The thick yellow line near the kerb.......our ranks dont have that, although your right when you read the variations on the diagram.

I removed that bit because on second thoughts that perhaps you were alluding to what Nidge and Edders referred to, namely the fact that the line was away from the kerb.

I would have thought that the requirement to have the thick line 'placed at the edge of the carriageway' would be satisfied even if the line was a few centimetres away from the kerb, but I certainly don't know much about these matters, so Nidge and Edders might be right.

I was thinking the need for double yellow and single yellow lines wouldn't be needed as surely the parking violation would have a specific offence for parking on a taxi rank?

But then I thought about your post and had a lightbulb moment......what if the rank is part time! During non operational hours people could park on the rank.....thus the need for yellow lines!

We get this a lot, it just shows you how the public view us.

One young foul mouthed lady told one of the drivers to F off one night, as he wasn't a full loaf anyway and he had asked her politely not to park there, he took the TX he was driving Baghdad Edition btw and ground it into her door mirror, now I don't normally think that is cricket myself, but as she was a complete up herself makeup covered tart I found it rather amusing, needless to say the car was never seen again on the rank.

Our main evening rank is part-time and to be honest all a bit confusing.

Recently I pointed out to an elderly lady that she wasn't allowed to park there because it was a taxi rank - I usually think the vehicles in front and behind the private car is a bit of a giveaway, but clearly that doesn't cut the mustard with some - and she indignantly asked me to point out where it said she couldn't park there.

Er, I said it was on the signs. "Oh", she said, "You'll have to show me, I haven't got my glasses with me".

Try telling that to the blue badge brigade who thing they can park where the f**k they like just because they've got a blue badge.

Round here they park anywhere then run to the shops leaving their motors parked on junctions so you can't see what's coming the other way.

There's flagrant abuse of the blue badge scheme going on at this moment in time, it needs stopping.
