but, I don't think anybody should have to have voice as a standard on the CCTV.

Without audio I think CCTV is weakened, possibly to the point of being useless.

When things kick off in cabs they usually have a build up, and that build up is often verbal only.

Also how does anyone prove they said a certain destination without audio?

And how do a significant number of drivers prove that they have been racially (verbally) attacked without audio?

We all know that when a significant number of us white chaps get pi**ed, we think it highly amusing to racially abuse non-white drivers. And if audio can reduce that, then I would be a very happy bunny.

I agree.

This story is perhaps why the LA should manage the system.

as some one who will be directly affected by this draconian measure, all i can say that most hack drivers are quiet professional and dont get that many complaints.

if anything its for the mushrooming ph trade, one company gloats it has over three hundred cars on thier fleet, but it does not have the work for them.

in my experience its because of the problems that they get in the ph i.e. sexual assaults, illegal pickups, not being the correct driver, doing the bradford run etc etc that this measure is coming in.

all i can say is agree the route, take cash up front and you'll have no problems!!

And quite rightly so.

I f*cking hate both the Daily Mail and Daily Express, they are newspapers aimed at a specific class of people and audience.

They say nothing about cameras being in shops, banks, tube stations (not that they're particularly popular in Carlisle), on the high street, in petrol stations, on motorways.......they say nothing about the abuse of CCTV when councils do it like Ashfield...collecting a few registration plates of daft cabbies waiting to get on cab ranks.

But the moment theyre publicised as being fit in cabs....they take a fit.

Perhaps if the public sat in cabs and paid the driver, like they should.....without trying to stab him, or be sick over the back of his head, or insult him, or lie about him because they've spent all their money on a pizza rather than keep money for the cab fare home.....CCTV wouldnt be necessary.

Yes I think conversations in cabs are private, yes there is a cab driver passenger relationship.....but not one they would admit to. But to be honest, I don't want to know the majority of customers when I'm not driving a cab.....invariably they are complete c*nts.

Just a thought

To be fair the article does seem to be written by a taxi driver complaining about them rather than from the public's perspective.

I think it's someone taking the p*ss out of what a cab driver would say.

You're probably right about the authorship, but on the other hand it seems quite sympathetic to the taxi driver's perspective - or at least those who regard this type of thing as a spy in the cab - rather than your own characterisation of it above.

To get the message home to the punters perhaps a surcharge should be brought into the tariff to pay for the proposed CCTV - Once again the LVs are quite content to spend our money for a cause that is not really in their eyes, for the drivers - but more for the passengers!!

If they want to improve the Gas,Electric,Water works then the price goes up to cover the so called investment - we should be looking for some sort of compensation to cover our costs in times of great hardship/recession.

Yes, there's so much investment going into Oxford's £100,000 plates that there's nothing left for a three hundred quid CCTV system.
