Taxi driver jailed over sex assault on passenger
Posted on 21st November 2011 12:11

A taxi driver who sexually assaulted his passenger has been sentenced.

Bukhtor Singh, 40, of Bagnall Road, Basford, had picked up the woman, who had been out for the night in the city centre.

He pulled off a road as he took her home to Beeston, and sexually assaulted the 23-year-old.

Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday (18 November), Singh was jailed for seven years, and told he must attend a sexual rehabilitation course and sign the Sex Offenders’ register for life. He has also received a life-time ban from driving a taxi.

He had been found guilty at an earlier trial.

DC Antony Miller, who investigated the case, said: “Singh abused his position as a taxi driver, on which the victim should have been able to rely.

”While this kind of behaviour is out of the ordinary, unfortunately there are a few unscrupulous drivers. I would urge people to plan for their journey home and pre-book taxis with reputable companies.

“The victim was determined to report what happened to ensure other people did not have to suffer. For that she should be commended, and I hope the sentence allows her some closure.”

Can the courts impose such a ban?

Yes.

But with any court order there is nothing stopping anyone going back to court at a later date to remove or amend it.

Does the council licence disreputable ones then?
