Boris in u-turn over taxi staff move
Boris Johnson: Made a u-turn on plans to move London cab staff to CoventryBoris Johnson has performed a last minute 'U-turn' on plans to transfer to Coventry staff who licence and check the capital's 22,000 black cabs and 50,000 private hire cars.
The decision came late last night - on the eve of a planned demo today outside Transport for London (TfL) headquarters in Victoria Street by cab drivers and staff facing redundancy.
Nearly 100 TfL staff, who were facing the sack if they did not transfer to a private company 100 miles away up the M1 to save cash, have now been told their jobs are safe, the TSSA union revealed.
Manuel Cortes, the TSSA leader, said: "This is very good news for all our members at TfL who were facing the real prospect of losing their jobs if they refused to move to the Midlands.
"London's black cabs are famous throughout the world for the service and security they povide.
"Staff based in Coventry would never have been able to provide a better service."
Helen Chapman, deputy director of TfL's taxi and private car hire directorate, confirmed the plan to privatise the service had been withdrawn from today's (WED) meeting of TfL's finance and policy committee.
A new plan will now be considered in the New Year focusing on how the service "could be delivered in house..."
