Two Oxfordshire taxi drivers are fined for graffiti

SP£ND tag was sprayed on road signs in the Witney area

Two taxi drivers who painted the symbol "SP£ND" around West Oxfordshire have been fined a total of £5,100.

Brook Purvis, 34, of Whittington Place, Carterton, and Matthew Carr, 25, of Cranham Street, Oxford, pleaded guilty at Oxford Magistrates Court on Monday.

The men committed more than 20 offences each in the Witney area between February 2010 and January 2011, the court heard.

The fines will cover the costs of cleaning up the graffiti.

Speaking after the sentencing, PC Duncan Johnson said he was pleased both men pleaded guilty as the evidence against them was strong.

He added: "Both police officers and police community support officers collated a large amount of evidence after seeing an increase in the SP£ND tag appearing around Witney."

Purvis, who also pleaded guilty to cultivation of a controlled class B substance, was ordered to pay £2,200 in costs and fines, while Carr was ordered to pay £2,900.

Two in court to deny Sp£nd graffiti tag

TWO men have appeared in court to deny 23 counts of criminal damage in connection with the graffiti tag ‘SP£ND’.

Brook Purvis, 34, of Whittington Place, in Carterton, and Matthew Carr, 25, of Cranham Street, in Oxford, have been jointly charged with damaging properties.

They are alleged to have sprayed graffiti in a range of places in Witney, Carterton and Oxford.

Banbury Magistrates’ Court heard yesterday the charges related to incidents between February last year and March this year.

The court was told the word ‘spend’ had been sprayed in a number of spots, with a pound sign replacing the letter ‘e’.

Both men denied the charges and the case was adjourned.

Meanwhile, Purvis also denied producing a controlled Class B substance, which the court heard was two cannabis plants.

The pair will next appear at Aylesbury Magistrates’ Court, in Buckinghamshire, on Wednesday, June 22.

I hope the council take this into consideration when reviewing their licenses as well !
