Watchdog called in after taxi CCTV complaint

THE UK’s data watchdog is investigating a complaint about controversial moves to record all conversations in Oxford’s taxis.

The Information Commissioner said it had received a complaint from a member of the public over Oxford City Council’s plans.

It follows an outcry over the scheme, which council chiefs and taxi leaders say is vital to protect drivers from attacks and allegations.

A civil liberties group said the cameras – which have to be in all 662 taxis by March 2015 – are an invasion of privacy.

They would record video and sound as soon as the key is turned in the ignition and for 30 minutes after it is switched off.

Footage would only be accessed by a council officer or police when investigating specific allegations.

Commissioner spokesman Greg Jones said: “We have received a complaint and are making inquiries.”

He said councils “must take account of people’s right to privacy” and take measures “proportionate” to safety concerns.

Council spokesman Louisa Dean said: “We have had an inquiry from the Information Commissioner who wishes to better understand the CCTV scheme.

“We are happy to assist in those inquiries.”

Alan Woodward, general secretary of the City of Oxford Licensed Taxi Cab Association, has stepped down after 16 years.

He cited the row and “personal reasons” for his decision.

Mr Woodward, who backs the CCTV scheme, said: “The drivers don’t seem to know what they want. They need to make up their mind.”

With Charlie, it might!

That was pretty nasty of me - but you all were thinking the same.

Charles, I am sorry, I actually think that you work harder than many and for that, you have my respect.

the thing is the taxi drivers werent properly consulted over the camera issues, Colta and a few of the PH Barons attended a meeting with the council, the PH Barons and the council wanted camera's and Colta went along with them.

colta is a good association, the general secretary is only one part.

But the reason people don't quit is, and I will mention those above, who is better to look after Mr T's interests than Mr T, the Captain's other than the Captain, same with me, and no-doubt you.

Sussex.. your reasons for representing the private hire in Brighton and Hove might well be because of your own vested interests.....
I have already retired once as a trade rep..... and then asked to come back... I really didn't want to.... but to deal with councils... you have to understand how they work... you have to understand how licensing officers can use the system against you.... How they make mistakes and the trade ends up paying for it...... you don't find many taxi drivers with these qualifications..... I'm really wish you did..... most of the hackney drivers in Sefton are friends of mine.....

I dont think you are right Sussex i ahve worked with both cc and Mr T. as you know i fell out big style with both the NTTG, and NTA, Mr T was part of the nttg when i was i never found him to look after himself, the same with cc, in fact he would put is self out for members. i dont know you sussex so would never judge you as a rep, all i know is we are losing a lot of good reps and there are very few will to take over.

Charlie you miss the thrust of my post, it isn't a pop at Mr T or the Captain.

I'm saying the reason they do what they do is because they can rely on themselves to do a sound job.

Who can you rely on to do as good a job in your manor, other than you?
