Five-year jail term for taxi driver sex fiend

A BOGUS taxi driver who preyed on Brentwood women has been jailed.

Martin Roberts, 49, described in court as a danger to women, was convicted of kidnapping and indecently assaulting four Brentwood women in 2003 after luring them into his fake taxi.

The local media was praised by police for its part in his conviction.

Publicity given to an attack on a young woman in the town in May 2003 encouraged other women to come forward.
Three women contacted police with reports of similar attacks.

Roberts, of Handley Green, Laindon, was sentenced to five years in prison plus three on extended licence at Basildon Crown Court on Tuesday.

He was also placed on the sex offenders' register for life.

After the case, Detective Sergeant Tom O'Brien from Brentwood CID thanked the local press for the publicity it gave to the case in 2003, which he said had helped gain Roberts's conviction.

He also warned women of the dangers of getting into taxis at night without checking they were legitimate.

He said: "I would ask women to ensure any taxi is genuine before they get into it."
