Illegal taxi clampdown at airport

POLICE have carried out spot checks on taxis using Bristol Airport to ensure they are properly licensed.

Seven drivers were issued with prohibitions after being stopped by officers from Avon and Somerset Constabulary and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency on Thursday.

Offences included driving vehicles with more seats than the driver was licensed to, having defective tyres and broken seatbelts.

One vehicle was seized for no insurance and another driver received a fix penalty notice order for not holding the correct driving licence.

PC Simon Hartley said: “This operation was aimed at both on and off-site taxis and mini-buses to ensure airport customers were travelling to and from the area in safety.

“Most of the drivers were pleased to co-operate with the checks and to see we were cracking down on those that don’t take their responsibilities seriously.”
