Plan for town taxi rank thrown out
24 Mar 2005 10:02
A PLAN to set-up a taxi rank in Royston town centre has been rejected by Royston Town Council.
Members of the finance and general purposes committee said the scheme for a rank between Market Hill and Fish Hill could not be supported.
But it was suggested that a rank could either be introduced in Lower King Street or outside the Somerfield supermarket in Princes Mews.
The suggested site for the taxi rank had come from North Herts District Council after it said it had been talking to cab companies.
Councillor Rod Kennedy said: "We already have a taxi rank in the town centre and no taxis ever use it because of accessibility."
He said cab drivers did not want to make "a tour of the town" every time they were called.
Councillor Mike Harrison said: "I would oppose any loss of parking places in the town centre. We need every space.
