Thugs target Leeds taxi drivers Published on Saturday 9 June 2012 20:00A gang are believed to be behind a string of violent robberies on taxi drivers in Leeds.
One cab was allowed to roll down a hill and only the driver averted disaster.
In the first at 3.15am on June 1, a cabby was flagged down in Sycamore Avenue, Harehills, by a man.
When he stopped, two masked men jumped in and began beating him before grabbing cash. They tossed his keys into a garden then ran towards Harehills Lane. They were black men and wore balaclavas, gloves and dark clothing.
At 1.45am the next day a driver on Conway View, Harehills, was asked to wait by a man. The stranger returned and grabbed him around the neck while an accomplice searched his pockets and stole money. They dragged him out and beat him. On failing to start the car one attacker released the handbrake and let it roll downhill. The cabby jumped in and halted its progress.
At 4.15am on Sunday a driver was assaulted and pulled from his cab in Bayswater Terrace, Harehills, by three men who grabbed cash and keys. They ran along Harehills Road. Two were black, aged about 30, 6ft tall and large, with dark clothing and hoods hiding their faces.
A fourth driver was targeted in Easterly Road, Harehills, about 1.20am on Monday by two men who attacked him, stealing cash and a phone. They fled through fields leading to Harehills Lane. One was black, aged 23 to 24, about 5ft 10in tall and well built. He wore a dark brown jacket and dark jeans.
The final robbery was in Gathorne Terrace, Harehills, at 1.15am on Wednesday when three men assaulted a cabby and stole cash and a phone from his pockets. They escaped towards Spencer Place. One was black, aged about 25, 6ft tall and wore dark sports clothing and a hooded top. He had a slim face and a long nose. Another was white, aged 24 to 26, about 5ft 5in tall and heavily built. He had white bottoms and a brown jumper.
