Fireman attacks cabby in drunken brawl Mar 23 2005

AN OFF-DUTY firefighter faces losing his job after punching a town cab driver and driving off in his taxi following a drunken bout.

Leigh Hurry, 34, of Perryfield Road, Southgate, pleaded guilty at Crawley Magistrates' Court on Friday to assault and aggravated vehicle taking.

Ghulam Hussain, prosecuting, said the incident at Greenacres, Furnace Green, on February 13 began as a result of confusion over whether the cab had actually arrived for the firefighter since it had been ordered by someone else on his behalf.

The argument continued while Hurry was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle and from there he punched the driver and damaged the radio. Fearing the fireman would continue his attack, the driver left the scene.

Mr Hussain said: "The defendant told the driver if he didn't take him where he wanted to go, he would punch him."

Hurry then grabbed the car radio and threw it to the floor before punching the driver in the face and threatening him.

Mr Hussain added: "Hurry initially left the cab then went back. He climbed into the driver's seat and drove off, turning right into Water Lea."

The loss of the taxi was reported to police and Hurry was stopped soon afterwards.

Paul Masters, defending, said: "Mr Hurry has serious personal problems and is suffering from depression. It was an isolated incident and completely out of character. His job is the only thing keeping him going but with a criminal conviction it may no longer be available."

The taxi driver had decided not to prosecute but the prosecution service decided to pursue the case. Magistrates ordered presentence reports and remanded Hurry on bail until April 12.

Well if he does get the boot, then surely he will just drive one of those party engines.
