Luggage charge for taxis could be introduced

Wednesday, June 13, 2012

People using hackney carriage taxis in Tewkesbury borough may soon face a new luggage charge.

The borough council's licensing committee has agreed that customers should pay an extra 25p for each item of luggage carried in the taxi.

Members ruled that passengers should pay 50p extra for a bicycle or animal they carry with them in the taxi.

They also said drivers could, if they wished, charge 50p extra if more than one person got into the taxi. The current charge, which some drivers choose not to impose, is 40p.

In a report to the committee meeting, council officers said: "The recommended alterations are in line with common practice in other local authority areas and are felt to be both fair to drivers and passengers."

The proposed changes will be put in place shortly unless there are objections once they have been publicly advertised by the council.

I'd like to get rid of ours and have a one off rise in the flag drop as compensation.

But unfortunately not all in Brum see it that way and want to keep the extras for passengers and luggage.

Best thing we done in London when the extras went.

And I'm still miles cheaper than Addison Lee to the Airports for 6.

I have to agree totally with this post. Usually it is Airport and Station workers who object.

Instead of coming out with 10 bags maybe they could use their cannister and make 5 bags, instead of one bag for a loaf maybe they could team the loaf up with the mik??

I always thought that "Extras" was a charge made for Items loaded by the Driver, as opposed the passenger's hand baggage which they loaded themselves.

Our bylaws state '20p extra for each bag, wheelchair or pram carried in the boot'. It doesn't say luggage so technically 10 carrier bags can mean £2 in extras, I don't think anyone bothers charging the extras though - they wouldn't get away with it !
