Regular broke Nelson taxi man’s jaw

A REGULAR customer of a taxi firm smashed a cabbie's jaw after he was refused a free ride and got soaked in heavy rain, a court heard.

Burnley Crown Court was told how “agitated” Mohammed Aslam punched Zafoor Anwar because he thought the victim made a sarcastic remark about him being drenched.

Mr Anwar had to undergo surgery to have a plate and screws inserted into his jaw and had been left scarred, after the unprovoked attack on January 3.

Jobless Aslam, 33, of Railway Street, Nelson, admitted inf-licting grievous bodily harm. He was given eight months in jail, suspended for two years, with 150 hours unpaid work and a three month curfew, between 7pm and 6am. The defendant was also ordered to pay £360 compensation.

David Macro, prosecuting, said the victim worked at Number 1 taxis in Nelson and was at the cab office. He knew the defendant as a regular customer.

At about 9. 30pm, Aslam turned up wanting a free ride and the victim refused, alth-ough he had given him free rides in the past.

Mr Macro said the defendant left the taxi office and returned about 10 minutes later, wet through.

Aslam said he thought Mr Anwar made a sarcastic remark about him being soaked and punched him in the right side of the chin. The victim instantly knew his jaw was broken. Mr Anwar went to hospital and had an operation to fix his broken jaw under general anaesthetic, and had a metal plate and screws inserted. A wisdom tooth also had to be removed.

Aslam had a conviction for robbery in 1997, but had not been in trouble since 2007.

James Heyworth, for Aslam, urged the court to pass a suspended sentence.

The barrister said: “He is ashamed that, having believed he had put his offending past well behind him, he lets himself down and causes a bad injury to somebody who did nothing to deserve such an injury.”

Sentencing, Recorder John Gibson told the defendant: “You struck out at the victim for no good, lawful reason at all.”
