Greener taxi hits the town’s roads


A TAXI firm keen to boost its green credentials has added an environmentally friendly vehicle to its fleet.

Swift Cars, a private hire company based in Silchester Road, St Leonards, has added a small car to their fleet, perfect for the single person journeys which make up 80 per cent of their custom.

The ‘taxi for one’ service was given the go ahead by the council’s licensing department, and as of last Monday (September 3) it has been on the road.

The Citroen C1 is not only better for the environment in terms of emissions, but is cost effective as is cheaper to run than their other two-litre vehicles.

Owner Shirley Sanders said that if the trial was a success, in six months time she and husband Norman would consider adding more of these vehicles to their fleet.

She said of their efforts to be more environmentally friendly: “My husband has been wanting to do this for about two years.

“We are the first in the south east to do this.”

Shirley and Norman also plan to offset their carbon emissions from the C1 over the next year by planting trees in East Sussex.

Shirley added: “We wanted to start a trend for other companies to follow suit in the area, and further afield, and become carbon aware.”

Why doesnt their fleet comprise of 80% of C1's if 80% of their work suggests that it should be?

Aint it weird......15 years ago companies were opening up specialising in the disabled......now it pays to be green

how about a disabled passenger in a wheelchair that wants to be green? Do their views on our world not count?

My outgoings to run a 2 litre are about £15,000+ p.a (rent, insurance etc.). If I put a C1 on I'd save what, about £500 on fuel (what's the mpg on a C1 compared to a 2l diesel?) and a bit on the road tax. Still be paying out around £14k though, and after taking into account all the lost work where there's more than one passenger I reckon the profit would be less than on a 2 litre 4 seater.

How many similar stories are we seeing around the UK I still haven't seen one of these cars that an operator in Peterborough was allegedly going to operate a fleet of ! Could it be that passengers wouldn't be seen dead in one of those and they find that out only after putting them on the road !

Basically despite what these super bright people think, there is no market for these motors.

Niche products might seem good to all those recently made redundant, but there is usually a good reason why no-one else is supplying a particular offering.

Mostly because it ain't viable.

Aye...and often the reason is that when you go to collect 1 punter there is suddenly an extra 1 or 2 in their party..!

Or the customers feel uncomfortable having to sit so close to the driver many prefer to sit in the back of the vehicle !

As I've mentioned the outgoings to put and keep a taxi on the road will be roughly the same no matter what type of vehicle it is as we all have to pay things like rent, insurance, pits, repairs and maintenance.

I doubt the companies charge these vehicles a reduced rent, the insurance will probably be similar and the tests and licences will be the same - so no savings there. I also wouldn't reckon the repair and maintenance costs are much less if at all, depends on the reliability of the vehicle more than anything.

Granted the vehicle may cost less to buy initially and there's a saving on the road tax, but the only other cost saving is on fuel which is what ? An extra 20mpg 'ish ?

Now (for me) an extra 20mpg equates to around £6 saving in fuel per shift, but if I lose out on just ONE job that was for more than 1 passenger per shift it would wipe out that fuel saving, any more and I'd be worse off. To put it another way losing one £5 fare for greater than 1 passenger per night means £1,800 per year, do these vehicles work out at £1,800 cheaper per year to run ?
