Council to review use of bus lanes

A REVIEW of bus lanes is to take place after cabbies at one firm were hit with a number of fines.

Around two dozen staff at the private hire taxi company were hit with £60 fines from North Tyneside Council for using the new Balliol Bus Link, despite a sign saying the road can be used by buses, cyclists and taxis.

But now the authority is to carry out a review of bus lanes, taking into consideration the concerns raised by private hire firms.

And the review will also look at how best to keep bus lanes as a means of facilitating the easy movement of public transport while also supporting the needs of businesses.

The Balliol Bus Link was installed following public consultations, with the council saying they received no objections from the private hire trade.

Mayor Linda Arkley said: “As a borough it is important that we ensure we have a transport network that supports our businesses and the growth of our town centres, but also facilitates public transport.

“It is unfortunate that we didn’t receive this valuable feedback from the private hire trade during the recent consultation.

“However, I am keen to ensure that we have a review to allow everyone with a view on the future operation of North Tyneside’s bus lanes to share them with us.

“This will include seeking the views of our transport infrastructure partners in the north east.

“In the interim, and pending the outcome of that review, I have agreed that we can give dispensation to the private hire trade to use bus lanes in North Tyneside, alongside buses and hackney carriages.”

The review is expected to take three months. Anyone who wants their say should email parkingcontrol@northtyneside.gov.uk

Not being ar*ed isn't an option........perhaps if Blueline made input instead of court cases they might have bothered reading the paper when the traffic order came out?

It must be really easy to distinguish taxis from PH there, the PH have top signs, but the signs make them look like taxis

Makes you wonder why the council wont allow them to use bus lanes - but will allow top signs.

Yes, but that's not the point.

PH should have equal access.
