Taxi fare increase to take effect this week

The average taxi fare will rise by 21 pence this Saturday when Transport for London’s (TfL) below inflation fare hike takes effect.

With inflation at 2.8 per cent, fares are to rise 1.7 per cent to account for higher fuel prices and operating costs for taxi drivers, TfL said.

According to TfL the average cost of a journey taken after 10pm will increase by 27 pence - from £15.30 to £15.57.

Alongside the fare hike, a special provision means an 40 pence rise is also possible if the price of diesel reaches 179.7 pence per litre.

A TfL statement said: “The new fares seek a balance between maintaining income levels for drivers while ensuring passengers still get a fair price for the high quality and unique service provided by the capital’s taxi drivers.”

It added that this was the smallest fare increase since 2002, when TfL began licensing taxis.

Passengers hailing taxis at London’s biggest airport will also see the “Heathrow Extra” surcharge rise 80 pence, taking it from £2.40 to £3.20.

TfL’s board approved the new fares earlier this year following consultation with the taxi trade, London MPs and assembly members, and organisations such as London TravelWatch, Age UK, and London Boroughs.

jeez, you been keeping notes, its almost 10 years since me and a great colleague met with GBC in a certain London hotel, we were given a left into the west end by the same chap - who suitably refused our pleas for a taxi to return to our hostilery, such is the way of life.....such was how I found Guinness.
