Taxi driver to be compensated after door damaged in argument in Shildon

A MAN who kicked out at a taxi door after arguing with his girlfriend has been ordered to pay £130 compensation to the driver.

Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court heard that Ashley Scott Gray started arguing with his partner while they were in a taxi on their way home after a night out on March 3.

Gray, 21, of Auckland Terrace in Shildon, kicked out at the door causing damage to the inner lining and locking mechanism, the court heard.

Prosecutor Blair Martin said the damage cost £20 to repair and the taxi driver lost £110 worth of earnings due to the vehicle being out of service.

Lyanne Steinberg, mitigating, said Gray and his partner rarely argue and he could not even remember what they had fallen out about as he was drunk.

District Judge Martin Walker said the crime was made worse because the victim had been a taxi driver.

He said: "Anybody whose occupation concerns coming into contact with and serving the public is in a particularly vulnerable position, and in a vehicle there is an even greater danger."

The judge ordered Gray to pay £130 compensation and complete 80 hours of unpaid work over the next six months.

He has been briefed well.
