Drug user gets heavy fine for damaging taxiA reveller who smashed a taxi wing mirror in Chesterfield town centre and was caught with cocaine by police has been ordered to pay out £715.
Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Monday how Kurtis Britland, 22, of Peveril Road, Chesterfield, smashed the taxi wing mirror on Holywell Street and following his arrest police discovered he had had a gramme of the class A drug cocaine in his possession.
Becky Allsop, prosecuting, said: “The taxi driver had been aware of fighting in the street about 2am and when it stopped Britland walked past and punched his wing mirror and smashed the glass before running down Corporation Street.
“Police followed and the taxi driver pointed Britland out as the person responsible.”
Britland was arrested and taken to the police station and, according to Mrs Allsop, when the defendant got out of the police car one gramme of cocaine was discovered where he had been seated.
Britland pleaded guilty to causing damage and possessing the class A drug after the incident in November.
Jon Barber, defending, said Britland had had too much to drink and had struck the taxi wing mirror.
Mr Barber added: “He cannot remember doing it but he had cuts to his hand so he accepts he must have done it.”
Magistrates fined him £300 for possessing cocaine and ordered him to pay a £30 victim surcharge. He was also find £200 for the criminal damage and was ordered to pay £100 compensation and £85 costs.
