If this is just left to fade into the darkness then the southend taxi trade deserve,s everything they get. The way it stands now you have the media coverage and public sympathy and a police investigation all going on down there after a old man was brutally beaten up. FFs dont waste it everyone of yous phone your councilors up and tell them how yous feel and ask what the council intend to do to fulfill THERE duty of car towards taxi drivers also Demand safer working condition (cctv). The hackney assosiation should be talking to the press drumming up more public support. hackney and private hire should Demand a meeting with the police as they also have a duty of car to make sure you are safe. Or just revert back to the norm and eat another pie then turn a blind eye and shaft your workmate for a 3 quid fare

I can see them all now gossiping on the ranks, proportioning blame and responsibility to Ken for getting out of his taxi.

"It was Ken's own fault he should have stayed in his vehicle, how's it our problem, silly old cu**"

You've only got to look on TDO, to see the mentality of the average cabby. It would make you sick. #-o #-o #-o #-o

The problem with the best-practice guide is that a council can interpret it any way it likes, or it can simply do nothing while claiming to have considered what is said. It can, however, be used to support the argument for CCTV, if these Southend taxi drivers actually get off their ass and do something about it. :-|

Aye you would expect unions like the GMB to be jumping all over the issue of a 77-year-old driver taking a beating, even as a PR exercise to protect their members and possibly to recruit more members but not so much as a murmur. #-o It just goes to show these guys make their money far too easily. #-o

Trotsky, are you out there, your unions are not worth a sook. #-o #-o #-o #-o #-o #-o #-o #-o

Skull been suspended from here for a while.....................no doubt many are pleased to have my wisdom back

as for this issue ,,,,,,,,,,,surely its obvious...................the union members in the area have the resources to address this issue................sadly i suspect there are very few in that part of ESSEX.

And of course without members nothing will happen......................i did a few years discuss the violence towards Drivers in our industrys,.with a government minister Rosie Winterton and she was shocked and policies were suggested.............then along came another Government #-o #-o who couldnt give a friar tuck

I SUGGEST PERHAPS YOU WITH YOUR VAST EXPERIENCE COULD SUGGEST ANOTHER METHOD OF ACCESSING GOVERNMENT MINISTERS :?:

I would suggest that your council is failing to meet its duty of care to licensed taxi drivers. Don't forget your council is responsible for public safety and how people are affected by violent crime and regularly hold meetings with the police to address these issues. Your problem is, taxi driver safety is not on their political agenda. In short, your unions or associations are failing to raise the issue, and forcing them to do something about it. :-|

Three deny attack on taxi driver Ken Wolfe

THREE men have denied attacking a taxi driver to avoid an £11 fare.

Ken Wolfe, 78, of Leigh, was left with a broken jaw, broken eye socket and two lost teeth after he was punched and kicked outside Sainsbury’s in London Road, Southend.

He was taken to Southend Hospital, but later transferred to Broomfield Hospital, in Chelmsford, due to the severity of his facial injuries.

He allegedly stopped at the supermarket so one of his passengers could use the cash machine to collect money for the fare. But Mr Wolfe was then brutally attacked.

Axl Gilbert, 21, of The Russetts, Rochford; Charlie Laidlaw, 22, of Hawkwell Park Drive; and Adam Rhuebell, 24, who is remanded in custody, all denied causing grievous bodily harm with intent when they appeared at Basildon Crown Court yesterday.

The hearing was initially delayed for a short period after things became “hostile” in the custody suite.

The three will stand trial on September 22.

Rhubell, who wore a green jumper and gold necklace, and Gilbert, who wore a dark blue jumper, were remanded in custody.

Laidlaw, who wore a white shirt and black trousers, was bailed on the condition he does not use a taxi or private hire vehicle. He is also banned from contacting Mr Wolfe or his co-defendents and must stick to a curfew.

Thugs who beat Southend taxi driver over £11 fare plead guilty to assault

THREE men admitted beating up a 77-year-old taxi driver over an £11 fare.

Adam Rhuebell, Axl Gilbert, and Charlie Laidlaw pleaded guilty to attacking Kenneth Wolfe, leaving him with a broken jaw, broken eye socket and two lost teeth.

Mr Wolfe, from Leigh, was dropping off two passengers outside the Sainsbury’s store in London Road, Southend, when he was attacked.

Mr Wolfe was attacked at about 11.25pm on Saturday, February 8, after one passenger pretended to get the money out to pay their £11 fare while the other passenger ran off.

The driver got out of his Ford Mondeo to demand the fare and was set upon by the two passengers before a homeless man also joined in the beating.

Mr Wolfe was taken to Southend Hospital by ambulance and later transferred to Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, because of his severe facial injuries. Gilbert, 20, and Laidlaw, 22, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing, but Rhuebell, 24, appeared at Basildon Crown Court yesterday to plead guilty.

Rhuebell, wearing a green custody-issue tracksuit, spoke only to confirm his name and indicate his plea to judge Jonathan Black. Speaking after the attack in February, Mr Wolfe, who has been a taxi driver for 30 years, said: “I’ve only tried to get people home and it’s a good profession, but this has always been a worry.”

Rhuebell of no fixed abode, Gilbert, of the Russetts, Rochford and Laidlaw, of Hawkwell Park Drive, Hockley, will be sentenced at Basildon Crown Court on Friday, November 7.

Myra Wolfe, Kenneth’s wife, said: “We are just pleased that, to all intents and purposes, the whole thing is now over.

“It has been a very difficult time for us, but the victim support people and Det Con Supt Ford have been a great help to us all the way through.”
