Devon County Council taxi driver denies abusing vulnerable girl on special school journeys



A taxi driver employed by Devon County Council allegedly groped a vulnerable teenaged girl as he took her from her supported accommodation to a special school.

Kevin Satterley took the girl from her home to a special needs school in Devon every weekday for seven weeks until she complained to carers she had been abused during the journeys.

The 18-year-old says he showed her pornographic films on a portable DVD player of adults having sex and went on to touch her breasts and private parts.

A teaching assistant at her special school had already reported concerns over Satterley’s behaviour after seeing him pat the girl on the bottom as he escorted her into his taxi, Exeter Crown Court was told.

Satterley, aged 48, of Redburn Road, Paignton, denies four offences of sexual assault by touching.

Mr Lee Bremridge, prosecuting, said the offences happened in July last year when the girl was living in semi-independent supported accommodation.

She was a student at a special needs school and Devon County Council organised and paid for a taxi to take her to and from school each day.

He said the girl sat in the front seat and the police were called in when she complained to carers that Satterley was flirting with her and touching her over her clothing during the 40 minute journeys.

He said the girl told carers he had shown her pornographic videos before touching her and police later recovered a portable DVD with an adult film from the car.

He said the girl’s condition meant her behaviour was more like that of a child of eight to 12 and vocabulary was that of a six-year-old but her outward appearance and presentation were normal.

He said:”Although she can present as a street wise teenager she is in fact a young woman who understands less than she may be given credit for and needs constant help and support.”

He passed the jury an account which she had written for carers in big childish handwriting.

It said:”It was every day and made me watch the portable DVD player. He touched me on my boobs and between my legs and every day he did not stop I asked him to stop.”

Mr Bremridge said the girl told police and carers Satterley flirted with her during the journeys and this progressed to watching DVDs and touching in the weeks before she reported it.

He said the girl’s story was supported by the discovery of the portable DVD player in the car and concerns raised by a receptionist at the school who was worried about the way he patted the girl’s bottom as they walked to the car.

Satterley denied touching the girl or showing her the DVD but said she may have seen him watching it when he was waiting to pick her up.

Mr Bremridge said: "The prosecution case is that he took advantage of his position of trust. He took advantage of her and sexually assaulted her in the way she has described.”

Vulnerable girl tells how she was allegedly groped by Devon County Council taxi driver


A vulnerable teenaged girl has told how she was too frightened to report a Devon County Council taxi driver who she alleges groped her during journeys to her special school.

The 19-year-old, who has an emotional age of about ten, was living in supported accommodation last summer but was a student at a special school.

She was transported by taxi driver Kevin Satterley, who was hired and paid for by Devon County Council.

Satterley, aged 48, of Redburn Road, Paignton, denies four offences of sexual assault by touching in June and July last year.

The prosecution say he took advantage of the vulnerability of the girl, who looks like a normal street wise teenager but has learning difficulties and the vocabulary of a six-year-old.

They say he showed her adult films on a portable DVD machine which police later recovered from beneath the passenger seat of his taxi.

The girl told the jury he touched her regularly on the 40 minute trips to and from school.

She said: ”When he touched me I would say to get off and leave me alone. He just kept touching me. I said he could not touch me because he had kids and a wife.

“I didn’t tell anyone at school I could not say anything. I was too scared and worried and did not know what to say. I sat in the front seat again because I did not think he would do it again.

“He should not have been doing that at his age. I did not know what to do.”

Satterley denies touching the girl at all or deliberately showing her any adult DVDs.

Taxi driver cleared of sexual assault on vulnerable girl

A TAXI driver who worked for Devon County Council has been cleared of molesting a vulnerable teenage girl.

Kevin Slattery was employed by the council to take the 18-year-old girl from her supported accommodation in Newton Abbot to a special educational needs school in East Devon.

He was found not guilty by a jury at Exeter Crown Court after telling a jury that any physical contact with the girl was accidental.

She alleged he touched her breasts and private parts on a daily basis during the final two weeks of last year’s summer term as she sat alongside him in the front seat of his taxi.

She said he also flirted with her and showed her an adult movie on a portable DVD machine which police later recovered from beneath the passenger seat.

The girl, now aged 19, has special needs, an emotional age of between eight and 12 and a vocabulary of a child of about six.

Satterley denied any deliberate contact with the girl and told the jury she ignored his repeated requests to sit in the back and insisted on sitting right next to him in the middle seat of his people carrier.

He was found not guilty by the jury after a four day trial.

Satterley, aged 48, of Redburn Road, Paignton, denied four offences of sexual assault by touching in June and July last year and was cleared of all counts.

He denied any inappropriate touching. He said the girl initially say in the back seat and he had asked her to remain there but she had insisted in sitting in the front with him, moving into the middle seat next to him when he drove a van-type VW.

He said he only physical contact between them came when his elbow brushed her arm as he was driving. He said she was often fidgety and messed about in the car, moving from the middle to the window seat as he was driving.

He said: ”I said to her point blank I would rather she sat in the back but she refused to do so. I treated her like any other customer.

“I have never touched her deliberately. Unless you have one of these vehicles you don’t realise how tight they are. If she was next to me my elbow was going to be pushing her or rubbing her arm.

“I did not sexually assault her. No. It is not the truth. I was not over friendly with her and I did not show her any pornographic films.”
