Strathclyde Police Road Policing Department has acquired the necessary equipment to carry out checks on motor vehicles fitted with tinted windscreens.



Heavily tinted windows restrict the driver's ability to see the road and pedestrians, especially in dark conditions. Those drivers who do not adhere to the regulations are committing an offence.

The equipment, which is currently used by VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Service Agency) is a hand held device, designed to measure the average visual light transmitted through a vehicle’s windscreen and front side windows.

Inspector Gerry Boyd, Road Policing Department said:

"The regulations specify the requirements for fitted glass in vehicles. The glass should allow 70-75% of light to be transmitted through the windscreen, depending on the age of the car.

"Officers from the Road Policing Department will continue to play an active part in this important road safety issue and take action against such conduct.

"I would advise motorists to adhere to the regulations. Further information can be obtained from www.vosa.gov.uk."
