A wee bit miss leading this article, the guy was using his taxi on social, domestic and pleasure business with his wife in the car.
He was not TAXIING at the time of the accident but this incident could lead to the introduction of random drink/drug testing of TAXI/private hire drivers.

No,just using it as an example of why certain actions lead to the introduction of regulatory powers.
My opinion is random testing should be implemented, every one knows there are persons driving under the influence of one or the other.

I'm sure if Plod wanted to Drug or Breath test a PH or Hack driver he'd find a reason to do so without having the Government bring out a law on it.

I think the point being made is that maybe testing drivers randomly from time to time might be a good thing for the trade, whilst the point you are making is that police could do that anyway if they wished.

I'm not sure the police have powers to stop cabbies randomly without reason.

Taxi Driver: "Why am I being stopped?"

Police: "You just swerved across the road to avoid that unconscious pish-head lying in the gutter, sir".

Taxi Driver: "Throw on the bracelets".

Back some years ago leading up to Chrustmas I was just starting my shift 6.00pm. I was flashed down (torch) by the police. Checked the cab over - please blow into this. They were specifically checking taxis/drivers leading up to the festive season - all clear of course.

lucky you I remember a police operation about 22 years ago where they waited for taxis to pick up off the rank and then pulled them a few hundred yards down the road to check the badge

not sure what that was all about but punters non too happy
