This is basically just advertising, but interesting that a major HC operation offering fixed prices within the city boundaries - is that unusual?

But doesn't take a genius to work out who they're competing against here

IT is a common sight to see the black hack taxis zipping through the city centre in Glasgow.

The hackney cabs are on the streets 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

With 800 cabs undertaking thousands of hires a week, it is even possible to have favourites - such as the 'People Make Glasgow' cab.

As of today, Glasgow Taxis has updated its app to offer a set price when you select 'book now', particularly on the most popular routes in Glasgow.

The top seven journeys in Glasgow are:

• Central Station to Queen Street Station

• Central Station to Buchanan St Bus station

• West End eg Byres Road to City Centre

• City Centre to Emirates Area/Parkhead

• City Centre to Mount Florida

• City Centre to Pacific Quay / SECC / SSE Hydro

• City Centre to Queen Elizabeth Hospital

If using the 'book now' button on the app, up to six customers can travel on the fixed fare prices for any of these routes - with the cheapest being £5, to the most expensive only £13.

Dougie McPherson, Glasgow Taxis Ltd chairman, said: “We know customers appreciate certainty so we’re delighted to have developed a Fixed Price facility on the Glasgow Taxis app which means anyone can benefit from a set price when ‘booking now’.

"It’s a brilliant new feature within our updated app, to add to our vast range of services tailored for customers.

“Our most popular journeys unveiled today also underline the role our drivers play in helping people around Glasgow, often tourists experiencing the city for the first time, as well as those visiting some of our most iconic and important venues.

It is very rare for areas that have meters in their cabs.

Clearly they don't have traffic jams in Glasgow, or customers are always waiting outside their houses or pub.

I suspect the black cab trade in Glasgow more dependent on pre-booked work than other cities of similar size.

So probably feeling the Uber/PH pinch more than most, thus having to do more to compete.

And that's just in the pre-booked market, never mind how the PH apps and Uber have encroached into public hire work.

this bunch of tossers only ever come up with these GREAT NEW IDEAS which ALWAYS means money out of MY pocket,totally bereft of any idea other than price cutting,and convieniently ignoring the licencing conditions which state all hires within the licenced area MUST be metered,and you are commiting an offence if you do not use your meter

You’re correct, the meter does have to be used within the licensed area, but that is the maximum chargeable, it doesn’t mean you have to charge it. (Unless Scottish law is different?)

scottish law is the same

dont know of anyone who has ever charged less than the metered fare,price on the meter,price you pay,unless youre happy to give away your hard earned

I totally agree with you, I was merely correcting you for starting it was against licensing conditions to charge less.

I wondered if Jozef was actually suggesting that the fixed prices are actually *more* than meter:




The first trip on the list certainly isn't very far - Central Station to Queen Street Station - yet the minimum fixed tariff is quoted as £5.

In fact the Glasgow Taxis 'price promise' 'route calculator' webpage quotes £4 for that trip.

The trip in the graphic above is quoted as £7 (Central Station to SSE Hydro), yet the 'route calculator' quotes £5 for the trip.

I'm assuming the route calculator is based on the meter. Or at least based on meter once upon a time
