Pub staff providing New Year's taxi service

A much-loved Suffolk pub is helping its New Year's Eve revellers get home safe - with a staff-operated taxi service.

The Chequers Pub in Stowmarket Road, Great Blakenham, is hosting a ticket-only New Year's Eve party on December 31.

But travel to and from the pub could have been an issue for some - so the team came up with a way to ensure that locals didn't have to worry about getting home after the countdown.

Owner David Laing said: "We realised that taxis and transport are expensive and difficult to hire, especially outside of Ipswich town centre.

"So we arranged for two members of our team to provide a taxi service for our guests to the surrounding area.

"We were sold out for our last New Year before Covid, so we expect to be busy and our free taxi service very popular."

Party-goers can book their taxi home by getting in touch with the pub team.

The pub reopened after the first national lockdown with a brand-new look, when Mr Laing said he was very pleased with the refit and kerb appeal.

The party includes a three-course meal, drinks and canapes and music from the pub's popular Elvis tribute act.

Me thinks the Suffolk taxi licensing team along with alcohol licensing want to visit this chap and point out the error of his ways, Numerous offences being committed if nothing is done.

Maybe They've Got Or Will Get A Licence. Or Perhaps Not

But I Wonder Whose Idea It Was To Put A Capital Letter In Front Of Every Word On Their Website.

Not sure about the legalities of this, but certainly a nice bit of free advertising in the press, and good gimmick to make sure people stay in your pub for several hours before going home :-o

Morecambe pub offers lifts home to customers unable to get a taxi

https://www.lancasterguardian.co.uk/new ... xi-3477195

A pub in Morecambe has promised to get its customers home safely after hearing about their struggles due to taxi driver shortages.

As we reported last week, there is a severe shortage of taxi drivers across the district which has led to numerous people being unable to get a lift home after a night out.

But at The Royal in Morecambe they have come up with a solution - a minibus to escort their customers to their front doors.

Bosses at the venue in Marine Road Central have a 16-seater minibus available to ferry their customers home on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

They say they have come up with the idea after hearing how many of their regulars don't feel safe having to walk home after a night out.

They posted on Facebook: "Sick of not being able to get home at the weekend?

"Well we have the solution, we are offering A FREE BUS HOME SERVICE to our customers.

"This will run EVERY FRI, SAT & SUN.

"To be able to get this you must: Be in the pub on Friday & Saturday before 9.00pm (lifts will be provided to your door from 23.30), Sunday in the pub from 5.30pm (lifts will be provided home from 21.00).

"When in the pub will receive wristband which you will need to get bus home.

"The driver will be at the back of pub ready to take you home when you need, we have a 16 seater minibus so plenty of room for people to get people home.

"We are doing this as a gesture of goodwill to our loyal customers as we have had a lot of feedback of people who cannot get home and are walking, we don't feel that is right or safe so we hope this helps.

"Please share the post and let as many people know as possible, if they want a drink at the weekend but are worried about getting home we have a solution for you."

Not sure about the licensing and legalities here, but apart from the fact that it's a 16-seater, this is the advert for a 'minibus driver', but there's no other relevant information.

But they've got nearly 100 Facebook comments saying what a fab idea it is, despite apparently only making the Facebook post a few hours ago :-s

Had a look back at the 'free taxi' pub posted by Sussex last week, and only one appreciative comment.

Funnily enough, just half an hour before I looked, someone had posted this:

Quote:
Lovely thing to do but please be sure you are not braking the law you have to have a taxi licence and insurance to give even free lifts home.

Wonder if that will put the 'brakes' on it

Am I missing something here or am I the only one that believes anything more than 8 seats is a bus and should be licensed as a bus ?

Can't see anyone disagreeing with that :-s

I think that's why the term 'minibus' is being used with regard to the 16-seater :D

I can drive a sixteen seat minibus on my standard drivers licence, and have often done so, when pinged as designated driver for away games. UTI.

But not for hire and reward.

But please don't say 'pinged', that's a taxi/PH driver's worst nightmare.

How true. However, anyone can hire a minibus and drive it, is all I’m saying.

Isn't that just for drivers who have old DVLA licenses?
