Isn't that in direct contradiction of the recent court cases that says that the drivers are not self employed but are workers under the direction of a company?

No.

The setting of your own fares, as a driver, is only one of many issues the Supreme Court (following on from the various lower courts) found in deciding the worker status of drivers.

I would imagine they tell Bolt that they want to work at base rate plus 25% or the base rate plus 50%, so the drivers set the rate and the app shows that rate to any prospective customers.

Maybe, but Bolt wouldn't be allowing this function if they thought that would be the outcome.

The problem the app firms currently have is that drivers are blanking work and customers are waiting.

Uber and Bolt don't seem to have any problems clearing work when they are offering the surge rates.

So are all these cancellations anything to do with the self-employment thing?

Can't be bothered looking back, but seem to recall that Uber drivers were only allowed to cancel a couple of jobs, but maybe that's been relaxed because of the self-employment issue, and they can now just cancel any job they want?

I suspect it was.

Before drivers got put on the naughty step if they binned a few jobs, and removed from the app if it continued.

The Reuters press notice announcing Bolt's plan included this:

Reuters wrote:
Uber had also started to allow drivers in California to set their own fares for trips, but removed the feature less than a year later, saying more riders declined higher fares and did not re-request a ride on Uber.

These are links to the two relevant articles on Uber's site, aimed at drivers. The second one in particular will do your nut :-o

But try reading it and it will demonstrate how difficult it is to analyse the impact of these things on the ground.

Not very well thought through

What on earth do you think surge pricing is?

And that's changing, like it or not, the PH trade nationally.

but is it really in the interests of the consumer to make pricing less simple and clear ?

Quite the reverse.

When a customer logs on to the Uber app, inquiring about availability, they are given the price. It's crystal clear.

Bolt back down on plans to let drivers set their own rates, due to high court ruling. According to the daily telegraph, so it must be true.
