Thought this was UK at first, but turns out it's Ireland :-o

So wouldn't have bothered with it, but it might as well be in the UK for all the difference...

Taxi drivers call for better enforcement against cars and lorries parking in their ranks

Taxi drivers in Navan have called for better enforcement against cars and lorries that park in taxi ranks, as Meath County Council prepares to move the taxi rank on Kennedy Road to Abbey Road.

Danny Fitzpatrick who represents 37 of the town's taxi drivers said they are angry at the way people seem to be allowed park cars or lorries in the taxi ranks, but if a taxi driver parks anywhere other than they are supposed to, they will be fined.

“It doesn't seem to be fair. We see cars, vans and lorries in the ranks, particularly on Kennedy Road all the time, and nothing happens.

“This causes problems for taxi drivers, but if the taxi drivers do anything at all that they shouldn't, they are penalised.”

Mr Fitzpatrick gave the example of a taxi driver who is battling prostate cancer, who parked illegally in Kennedy Place for three minutes, while he rushed to use the toilet in McDonalds.

“It was extremely urgent because of his condition. He was two to three minutes and got a ticket.

“He accepted he was illegally parked but wasn't blocking anyone and was only two minutes.

“He appealed providing a doctors letter about his condition and proof of where he was that day which showed he wasn't long in Kennedy Road, but his appeal was rejected.”

“We had what we felt was a very good meeting with the council and we were told that enforcement would be better on the taxi ranks, but we haven't seen any improvement.

Mr Fitzpatrick said they had been told work on Kennedy Road wouldn't start until the Abbey Road rank was complete, but work is taking place at both at the moment.

“They are digging up in both places.”

Mr Fitzpatrick acknowledged that the taxi drivers will be better off when the work is complete, but they are having problems conducting their business at the moment.

“We are down five or six spaces,” he said.

Meanwhile, Meath County Council officially advertised the temporary suspension of the appointed taxi stand on Kennedy Road and the designation of a new rank on Abbey Road to come into effect from midnight on Monday, 1st August until Wednesday, 31st July 2024, a period of 24 months, to facilitate construction works as part of the Navan Town Scheme.

Meath County Council has been approached for comment.

Recently the Gov has allowed councils to apply to enforce more traffic offences, and that can include the use of CCTV in places other than Bus Lanes.

Can't see any good reason why these powers can't be used to enforce taxi ranks 24/7.

No, it's English law.

Then the Government letting Councils here enforce more traffic offences doesn't really help them just NW of Dublin.

Indeed, but when people type in the google search bar 'private cars on taxi ranks' this thread will appear somewhere down the list, and the info about the new powers councils can apply for might help them out.
