Same old, same old, but of course there's a huge seasonal factor in places like Skeggy.

We certainly have loads of tourists in summer, but it's often not very busy because there are no students. Waited nearly two hours on the rank the other night

Busiest period here probably September when the students come back and have plenty money to spend, and it's still in the tourist season, although past the peak :?

Skegness taxis firms can't cope with 'manic' summer demand with holidaymakers expecting to be picked up in 10 minutes

"It's crazy," said one taxi company owner

Taxi firms in Skegness say they 'struggle to cope' during the busy summer months due to the extra demand of the tourist season. One company described the summer months as 'manic', saying the phone does not stop ringing.

Plans for CCTV cameras to be installed in Skegness were announced in July to make women and girls feel safer when travelling at night. The cameras will monitor routes between clubs and pubs to transport links. However one nightclub owner said many are forced to walk home in the summer due to how difficult it is to get a taxi at short notice.

Taj Bola, owner of The Hive, said: "Down to the lack of taxis at night, and because it is warmer at the moment, people are walking home instead of taking a taxi.

"In the winter we have 20,000 people in the town but in the summer we have tens of thousands more and the taxis can't cope. I rang four taxis and couldn't get one so I had to walk from Ingoldmells back to Skegness.

"There are no jobs in the winter so there's no point in companies like Uber expanding to the coast." He added: "Once I had some friends who went to Butlin's who wanted to come to our place for a night out.

"They then rang me back saying they couldn't come because they couldn't get a taxi."

Catherine Booth, co-owner of Premier Taxis, said: "It's crazy. "We are quite busy as a company anyway and through winter we have got school contracts and regular customers. In summer it is manic.

"It does not matter how many taxi firms there are or how many cabs you have in your fleet, there's not enough for the demand. Because a lot of people come from big cities like Nottingham or Leicester, they are used to taxis coming in 10 minutes, but here they have to wait."

She said she tries to direct people to other companies that may be able to help impatient customers. However, some can be abusive when taxis are not as available as they would like to be.

Mrs Booth said: "One woman left us a bad review because she couldn't get a taxi. She rang up and told her it would be 40 minutes and she chose not to book the taxi."

She added: "We often ring people back to check if they got themselves sorted. You just have to be polite and try to sort something out. You have to have good customer service."
