INVERCLYDE Taxis' director today hailed the council's decision to allow local cabbies to install CCTVs in their vehicles.

Company director Henry Glasgow is pleased with yesterday's decision to allow cameras in cabs in a bid to end a string of recent attacks on drivers.

The trade boss previously backed calls for the matter to be put in front of the local authority's general purposes board, citing several recent examples of drivers facing abusive behaviour.

Mr Glasgow said: "We're pleased that the council has given the go-ahead for CCTV to be introduced in taxis.

"Unfortunately, our drivers have dealt with abusive and anti-social behaviour on many occasions, as well as one recent incident of serious assault. Anything that can deter a small minority from acting in such a dreadful way has to be welcomed.

"We recognise that the Inverclyde Council decision is just the first step, similar to the policies adopted by other local authorities in Scotland.

"We will now look at available CCTV systems on the market that provide the right balance of protecting the interests and safety of both passengers and drivers.

"Ultimately it will be for drivers to decide when they want to install an Inverclyde Council-approved CCTV system, but we believe having that option available moving forward will make a positive difference."
