Two people were reportedly 'thrown in the air' after a motorbike smashed into the side of a taxi on a main road in Walkden on Tuesday evening (July 4).

Air ambulances landed on a nearby Tesco Extra car park following the collision as police closed off the busy main road, Manchester Road East (A6) for a number of hours. A number of ambulances and incident response vehicles were also at the scene.

According to eyewitnesses, the motorbike, which had reportedly been travelling down Manchester Road East shortly before 6.30pm, had hit the white taxi, smashing into the side of it before two riders were 'thrown in the air'. Greater Manchester Police is still to confirm the details of the incident.

As well as two air ambulances that landed in the car park of the Tesco superstore, a number of police vehicles remained stationed along the A6 with the road closed off in both directions after the smash.

One eyewitness who saw the collision said: "There were loads of people around them. Loads of people was getting out of cars and running across the road. I heard the guy on the floor just screaming in pain - it was horrible.

"Both of them were thrown in the air over the taxi. They have gone into the side of it and both gone over. We were on the way down in the car when they crashed."

Pictures taken at the scene show a damaged taxi and a motorbike on the floor. The air ambulances were also seen leaving the scene shortly before 8pm before the main road reopened. Horrified onlookers could be seen watching on as the emergency services worked at the scene.

The nature of the injuries sustained or any further details about the crash have not yet been confirmed. Greater Manchester Police have been contacted.
