Not job, at least not in the direct sense that she was a passenger, or a fake driver scenario.

But I suppose it's still a bit like what they call a 'situational' thing in the context of the grooming gangs and the like - it's the kind of scenario that taxi drivers will come across a lot, and thus the opportunistic could take advantage.

'Predatory' taxi driver raped drunken woman in Leeds alley next to Aldi supermarket, court hears

A ‘predatory’ taxi driver raped a drunken woman in an alleyway after following her when he finished his shift, a court heard.

Daniel Hayelom was seen to drive past the stumbling woman, before turning around and waiting for her.
He then led her down an alleyway next to Aldi in Beeston and had sex with her. He later claimed it was consensual, but the Crown say the woman was “too intoxicated to given consent”.

Hayelom is standing trial at Leeds Crown Court charged with rape, two counts of sexual assault and assault by penetration.

Opening the case for the prosecution this week, Michael Smith said the woman had attended a house party on the evening of October 21, 2023.

She left the party and was walking along Dewsbury Road at around 6am the next morning.

Hayelom had been working and had finished his shift when he drove along the road.

Mr Smith said: “It’s clear, we say, that he stopped his car, changed direction, watched the complainant, drove ahead of her, parked his car, got out and walked towards her and approached her.”

He put his arms out towards her, hugged her and “cupped” her buttocks with his hands. As she stumbled away, he pursued, embraced and kissed her.

Within three minutes of meeting her, he put his hand inside her underwear, then he walked her down the alleyway near to Aldi and raped her, Mr Smith said.

Hayelom, of Clyde Approach, New Wortley, was later arrested but claimed it was consensual. He said he thought he recognised the woman from his gym, but Mr Smith said they did not know each other.

Mr Smith said the victim was so intoxicated she “could not walk in a straight line”, and said due to that, she was incapable of giving consent.

He said: “At the heart of this, is consent.

“She could not remember much of what happened. She can remember parts of it, but not everything.”

Mr Smith told the jury it was “not victim blaming” and added: “Everybody should have the right drink alcohol and walk home.

“The fact is her intoxication meant she was simply not able to consent. That is not her fault. She should not have to expect the unwanted attention of anybody.”

He said that 35-year-old Hayelom had seen a “lone vulnerable woman” and took advantage.

He added: “The defendant’s behaviour was deliberate and exploitative, and to a degree, predatory.”

The trial, which continues, is expected to last around three days.

Zero mention of the t-word when he was originally charged.

If that's the criterion for consent, then there must be industrial scale rape going on that's never prosecuted nor punished.

Maybe it's a legal thing, but not clear precisely why the third description is only 'to a degree' :?

Alas I believe the above to be true.

I think the % of reported rapes that lead to a charge is less than 5%.

Jury shown CCTV moment taxi driver appeared to follow Leeds rape victim

A jury has been shown CCTV footage of the moment a taxi driver charged with rape appeared to follow his alleged victim who was making her way home after a night out.

Daniel Hayelom is on trial at Leeds Crown Court, accused of taking advantage of the intoxicated female in an alleyway in Beeston in the early hours.

He is accused of firstly sexually assaulting the woman, and then leading her into an alleyway off Tunstall Road where he is accused of raping her.

The 36-year-old is also charged with two counts of sexual assault and assault by penetration.

Hayelom, of Clyde Approach, New Wortley, later claimed it was consensual but the Crown maintain that the woman was too intoxicated to give consent.

The woman had been at a friend’s house party on October 21, 2023, and left at around 6am the next morning, walking along Dewsbury Road.

Footage played to the jury showed the woman stumbling along the road near to the junction with Garnet Road at around 6.15am.

Hayelom, who had finished his shift, was seen to turn into Garnet Road but then stop as the woman crossed the road behind him and continue down Dewsbury Road.

The taxi then turned around and drove past the woman, before returning moments later and waiting nearby as she first stopped outside a shop to look at her phone, then sat at the bus stop next to the United Reformed Church.

When she started walking again, Hayelom drove past her on Dewsbury Road and then parked up near the junction with Camberley Street, got out and began walking back towards her.

The footage shows she was clearly intoxicated and unsteady on her feet, with Hayelom walking towards her near to the Sheikh General Store with his arms outstretched in an apparent playful manner.

Hugging her and then kissing her, she then began to walk off. Audio from the CCTV picks up Hayelom saying “I need more”.

Dressed in jeans and white trainers, he is shown to catch up with her again and then kiss her. The footage also clearly shows him placing his hands into her clothing.

He walked with her as they turned off Dewsbury Road and along Tunstall Road. They then walked into the alleyway down the side of Poundland and Aldi where it was alleged Hayelom raped her.

Footage then showed him returning to his vehicle minutes later without the woman.

Following his arrest, Hayelom claimed he thought he knew the woman when he first saw her, but prosecutor Michael Smith told the jury on the opening day of the trial that they were not known to each other.

The trial continues.

From the name I'd guessed the perp here was East European. Or maybe it's just me 8-[

Or maybe he is East European :-o

Don't think there's much new here though, other than the verdict.

He's now an off-duty private hire driver rather than taxi driver, though :-|

Daniel Hayelom: Off-duty private hire driver raped woman after following her when she left party

A man has been found guilty of raping a woman in Leeds after following her as she walked home from a party.

Daniel Hayelom, an off-duty private hire driver, targeted the victim after he saw her walking along Dewsbury Road, in Beeston, shortly after 6am on Sunday, October 22, 2023.

CCTV showed him driving past and watching the victim from his vehicle before he parked up in Dewsbury Road and approached her on foot.

He engaged her in conversation and then walked her into an alleyway at the side of the Poundland store, in Tunstall Road, where he raped her.

He walked off with the victim before leaving her and returning to his vehicle. The victim continued home and later disclosed the incident to others who contacted the police.

Detectives from West Yorkshire Police Homicide and Major Enquiry Team launched an investigation, which included trawling CCTV in the area to trace the victim’s movements.

CCTV footage showed Hayelom following the victim in his taxi before approaching her on foot.

The vehicle’s registration was identified, and he was arrested later that day. He was then forensically linked to the offence by DNA recovered from the victim.

He was subsequently charged with rape and appeared at Leeds Magistrates Court on October 26, 2023.

The victim, aged in her forties, had been drinking at the party and the prosecution case was that she was too drunk to consent to any sexual activity.

Following a trial at Leeds Crown Court, Hayelom has been convicted by unanimous jury verdict.

The 36-year-old of Clyde Approach, Armley, is due to be sentenced on Friday May 2.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle said: “Hayelom targeted the victim as someone he saw as being vulnerable at the time. He could have helped her to get home safely but instead he chose to prey on her for his own gratification.

“His actions have had a significant traumatic impact on the victim, and we commend her for the courage and mental fortitude she has shown during the investigation and the court process that has resulted in his conviction.

“We hope she can find some degree of comfort in seeing him held criminally accountable for what he did to her.

“Women and girls should be safe to live their lives free from the fear of violence and harassment, and we remain fully committed to working alongside our partner agencies to make the county a safer place. Taking dangerous offenders like Hayelom off the streets will always remain a key part of our work to keep women and girls safe.

“Our professional and sensitive handling of this investigation should help to demonstrate to others how seriously we will always treat offences of this nature."

I'd guess that the words 'private hire' rather than 'taxi' are because the latter article seems to be based on the official West Yorkshire Police press release, while the first couple of article maybe the Yorkshire Post's own original copy :?

And, for what it's worth, there's a two-minute YouTube video of CCTV footage of him parking his car up etc, but it's not particularly illuminating.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMSenfkiFyQ

However, with regard to the trade angle, this Daily Mail screengrab from the video seems to show the U-word on the door sticker :-o

Which is an angle I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned, but maybe that's because he was off-duty at the time, so it's thought not appropriate to link him to Uber :?

So west yorkshire police have 6830 followers but only 9 likes on the video but couldn't see the number of views.

judging by the way he seemed to be not paying much attention to what other cars were around he definitely seemed to be more interested in the victims movements

It said 907 views when I visited it a few minutes ago, but I'd guess that would be dwarfed by the numbers who've seen on on the Daily Mail's website :-o

And I'd guess more would view the embedded version on the WYP website than on the YouTube website itself (although I'm not sure if the YouTube 'view' figures would include the embedded version).

https://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/new ... oman-leeds

As for subscriber numbers and the like, not sure how relevant all of that is. I mean, some people 'follow' thousands of accounts on Twitter, but I suspect that if you asked them, they'd be tight to name a couple of dozen of the accounts they supposedly 'follow'

Talking of page views and the like, anyone know why the 'views' figures on here have gone through the roof over the past few days? :-o

Like the 'users online' stat, I'd guess it's more of a technical glitch rather than a sudden upsurge in real readers 8-[

I suspect the thread's link has been shared on large WhatsApp or Facebook groups.
