Pervert private hire driver sexually assaulted teenage passenger

https://uk.news.yahoo.com/pervert-priva ... 00715.html

A perverted private hire driver was convicted of sexually assaulting his teenage passenger.

Kamran Nawaz, 37, appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court this week after he admitted to the charge.

He committed the heinous crime on May 23, last year, in the city's Anderston.

The court heard that the passenger was a 19-year-old university student who was intoxicated, however, the full details were not revealed.

Sheriff Allan McKay said: "I have been told that the incident happened in a taxi. He was the driver, he drove the girl to an address and there was contact before she left the taxi."

The court also heard that the doors were locked and the victim felt Nawaz's hand on her left leg and thigh.

When he was arrested, he told officers: “I only gave her a hug.”

The Renfrew resident's lawyer said: "This is an opportunistic conduct. It’s clearly unacceptable, he recognises that.

"He should have noted that this was a young, vulnerable woman at the back of his taxi. He accepts that he was wrong to take advantage of the circumstances.

"He did not misread the signals, there were no signals."

He explained that Nawaz, who has no previous convictions, has a young family with a baby on the way.

The solicitor added: "His partner is very unhappy about what he has done. Their priorities going forward are the new baby."

Sheriff McKay told the offender: "I am not certain it was impulsivity. I think it was opportunistic. I think you are a dangerous man and I am concerned you are driving a taxi."

Nawaz was sentenced to six months of supervision. He was also ordered to complete 135 hours of unpaid work and pay £300 to the victim.

The sheriff added: "This is a serious offence. If you breach the order and come back before me, I will send you to jail.

"Because of the offence, you are required to be placed on the sex offenders’ register for six months."

Glasgow City Council's licensing board revoked Nawaz's Private Hire Car Driver's licence at a meeting on May 28, 2024, after receiving a complaint from the Police Scotland chief constable.

It was suspended for the unexpired portion of its duration, January 31, 2026, with immediate effect.

Apart from that, the rest of the article gives the distinct impression she was in the front, but who knows?

"I've been told." Hardly makes it sound reassuring :?

Indeed, that is quite a curious remark. :-k

Maybe no one is sure exactly what happened, other than the driver, so an agreed-upon set of words was put before the judge.

Sort of.

Plea of guilty means there's no trial. Prosecutor (PF) then reads out a summary of what happened, which the defence accepts is accurate. Then the defence offers mitigation. That's what the sheriff has 'been told'.

Looking at the limited information we have from the article it seems that he kind of talked himself into this conviction.

Now I’m not complaining that a person has been convicted of an offence he committed, but one has to wonder what would have happened if he had said SFA.

I'm really surprised at a driver having a conscience. the majority of drivers would have been taking advice from friends and colleagues who would have said it's his word against hers take the not guilty plea.

Nice saving og taxpayers money :D

I suspect, if the account that appears in the article is correct, he thought admitting he gave her a hug was not a big problem.

However, an uninvited hug is a sexual assault, albeit not as serious as many we read about, so his admission of a hug was an admission of a sexual assault.
