Man who posed as taxi driver found guilty of serious sexual assault

A man who posed as a taxi driver to lure women into his car has been found guilty of a serious sexual assault.

Barzan Nawshowani pretended to be a taxi driver and picked up a woman and her friend after a night out in Glasgow city centre on August 7, 2022.

The 40-year-old drove the woman to a premises in the East End after her friend was dropped off and seriously sexually assaulted her.

Nawshowani was convicted at the High Court in Glasgow on Friday after a two-week trial and will be sentenced in due course.

Detective Chief Inspector Iain Nelson said: “Barzan Nawshowani took advantage of a woman who, believing him to be a bona fide taxi driver, trusted him to make sure she got home safely.

“He totally abused that trust and what he did was deplorable.

“I would like to praise the woman for coming forward to police.

“Her courage and testimony are what had him convicted today and also importantly it made sure he is no longer a risk to other woman at this time.”

Bogus taxi driver abducted and raped woman in Glasgow barber shop

https://www.glasgowtimes.co.uk/news/sco ... rber-shop/

A bogus taxi driver who abducted and raped a woman in a barber shop was jailed on Monday for six years.

Barzan Nawshowani, 38, preyed on her at KS Turkish Barbers in Glasgow's Dennistoun on August 7 2022.

Nawshowani pretended to be a taxi driver to pick up his victim and her friend after a city centre night out.

He went on to take the woman into the barber shop where he worked and closed the shutters.

Nawshowani then switched off the CCTV to the premises.

Court papers stated Nawshowani touched her on the body then kissed her on the mouth, neck and breast.

Nawshowani lifted her on to a work top and pulled down her lower clothing before he went on to rape her.

Nawshowani was found guilty at the High Court in Glasgow to abduction and rape.

Judge Lord Colbeck said: "You did not know your victim - she believed you were a taxi driver.

"You dropped her friend off in Govan and returned to your barber shop in the East End.

"Once your victim entered the shop you closed the electric shutters which prevented her from leaving and you raped her.

"I have regard to the psychological harm suffered which is harrowingly demonstrated in her victim impact statement.

"You targeted someone who was vulnerable at the time of the offence due to her consumption of alcohol.

"You admitted turning off the CCTV in the barber shop which concealed evidence.

"No responsibility has been accepted for the offence and you blame the victim, accusing her of lying about what happened.

"Having considered the circumstances of this case, I am satisfied there is no other method of dealing with you other than a lengthy custodial sentence."

Nawshowani was also put on the sex offenders register for an indefinite period.

Sarah Livingstone, defending, earlier told the sentencing that Nawshowani continued to profess his innocence.

The advocate also said: "He has had a fairly tragic life given his country of origin and suffering caused to the Kurdish people.

"HIs mother, father and five siblings were murdered in a terrorist attack.

"He himself was injured in a separate attack.

"Despite this, he managed with help, to come to Britain and has worked almost consistently culminating in being able to secure a loan to purchase the barber shop."

It was revealed that married dad-of-two Nawshowani has previous convictions for road traffic matters.

Visibly emotional Nawshowani shook his head before being led into the cells.

As usual, makes me wonder how precisely the 'taxi' hiring came about, and how precisely did the perp manage to get the victim into the shop?

They're at it again :-o

Whether it's AI or not, it's certainly not what we're used to

Of course, the thing to notice is that there are absolutely zero facts below that aren't in the more traditional report above, correct me if I'm wrong. But the style is completely and utterly different, and overblown.

Glasgow Court Convicts Imposter Taxi Driver in Harrowing Abduction and Rape Case

https://bnnbreaking.com/breaking-news/c ... -rape-case

Discover the harrowing narrative of Nawshowani, who exploited trust to commit a heinous act in Glasgow. Uncover the psychological impact on the victim and the call for justice and vigilance in the community.

In the shadowed streets of Glasgow, a chilling narrative unfolded that gripped the heart of the city, casting a stark light on the perils that can lurk behind seemingly benign encounters. The High Court in Glasgow became the stage for a harrowing tale of deception, abduction, and violation as it rendered a verdict against an individual who masqueraded as a taxi driver, only to prey on the vulnerability of a woman. The conviction of Nawshowani not only unveils a disturbing act of violence but also serves as a poignant reminder of the psychological scars borne by survivors of such heinous crimes.

A Night of Terror

It began as an innocuous journey, with the victim placing her trust in what she believed to be a safe passage home. Nawshowani, exploiting this trust, isolated the woman after having dropped off another passenger. The destination was not her home but a barber shop where Nawshowani worked. With calculated deliberation, he secluded their environment by shutting the shop's blinds and disabling the CCTV, creating a space where his dark intentions could unfold without interference. The subsequent act of rape not only violated her physical being but initiated a cascade of psychological turmoil that the victim would grapple with long after the night ended.

The Psychological Aftermath

The trial shed light on the profound impact of Nawshowani's actions on the victim, who courageously articulated her ordeal in a victim impact statement. Judge Lord Colbeck, in his remarks, underscored the significant psychological harm inflicted upon the victim, a consequence that often remains overshadowed by the physical aspects of such crimes. The narrative she shared painted a vivid picture of the terror experienced, not just in the moment, but in the haunting memories and altered sense of security that persists. Her bravery in coming forward and articulating the depths of her suffering is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity.

Justice and Reflection

The conviction of Nawshowani brings a measure of justice to the victim, yet it also compels a broader reflection on the safety and vulnerability of individuals in seemingly mundane situations. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the need for a collective effort to protect those who might find themselves in vulnerable positions. It also underscores the critical role of the judicial system in not only prosecuting such crimes but in acknowledging and addressing the multifaceted suffering of survivors.

This distressing episode in Glasgow's streets leaves an indelible mark on the community, echoing the imperative to foster a society where safety is not a privilege but a guarantee. As the victim embarks on a lifelong journey of healing, her story stands as a powerful call to action, urging us to reaffirm our commitment to vigilance, support, and justice for all.

Glasgow Incident: Woman Raped by Man Impersonating Taxi Driver in Barber Shop

https://bnnbreaking.com/world/honduras/ ... arber-shop

Discover the shocking case of a man in Glasgow who posed as a taxi driver to abduct and rape a woman in a barber shop. The incident highlights the risks of unverified taxi services and the importance of vigilance for public safety.

In a harrowing incident that has sparked widespread concern about public safety and the integrity of taxi services, a man in Glasgow was found guilty of posing as a taxi driver, abducting, and then raping a woman inside a barber shop. The case underscores the dangers of unverified taxi services and the lengths to which perpetrators will go to commit such heinous crimes.

Deception and Crime

Barzan Nawshowani, 38, exploited the trust typically given to taxi drivers by pretending to offer a ride to the victim and her friend. After picking them up, Nawshowani diverted to the barber shop where he was employed, under the guise of another destination. There, he proceeded to rape the woman after ensuring they were alone by closing the shop's shutters and disabling the CCTV system. This calculated and premeditated act of violence not only violated the physical sanctity of the victim but also breached the societal trust placed in taxi services.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

The conviction of Nawshowani followed a trial that revealed the disturbing details of his crime, including the significant degree of planning involved and the psychological trauma inflicted on the victim. Despite denying responsibility, Nawshowani was sentenced to six years in prison and was registered indefinitely on the sex offender registry. The judge's comments highlighted the severity of the crime, emphasizing the lasting harm caused to the victim and the calculated nature of Nawshowani's actions.

Public Safety and Vigilance

This case has led to calls for increased vigilance among the public when using taxi services, especially those that are unverified. It also raises questions about the measures that can be taken to prevent such crimes in the future, including stricter verification processes for taxi drivers and greater awareness among passengers about the risks of unlicensed taxi services. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers that can arise when trust is misplaced, and the importance of ensuring personal safety in all circumstances.

The conviction of Nawshowani not only brings a measure of justice for the victim but also serves as a critical wake-up call for the need to reinforce safety measures within the taxi service industry. As the public grapples with the shock of such a calculated breach of trust, the incident highlights the imperative for ongoing vigilance, both from service providers and users, to prevent such atrocities from occurring in the future. The community's response and the steps taken to enhance safety protocols will be closely watched in the aftermath of this chilling crime.

Well his sentence has been increased from six years to eight :?

Don't know what to say about that. But wondered where that AI site I was fixated with for a couple of days had disappeared to. Could never be bothered looking for it, though, but the links above are broken, suggesting the site has simply disappeared :-o

Barzan Nawshowani: Bogus taxi driver who abducted and raped woman in Glasgow has sentence increased

https://news.sky.com/story/barzan-nawsh ... d-13136506

Barzan Nawshowani was jailed for six years in February. The Crown Office challenged the sentence, with Scotland's senior law officer Dorothy Bain KC arguing it was unduly lenient.

A man who pretended to be a taxi driver before abducting and raping a woman in a barber shop has had his prison sentence increased by appeal judges.

Barzan Nawshowani, 38, posed as a cabbie to pick up his victim, 20, and her friend after a night out in Glasgow city centre in August 2022.

After dropping off one of the women in Govan, Nawshowani returned to Duke Street in the east end of the city and took his victim into the barber shop where he worked.

Once inside, he closed the electric shutters to prevent her from leaving and switched off the CCTV before raping her.

Nawshowani, an Iraqi Kurdish refugee who successfully secured asylum in the UK, was convicted of rape following a trial and sentenced to six years in jail in February.

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) challenged the sentence at the Court of Criminal Appeal in Edinburgh, with Scotland's senior law officer Dorothy Bain KC arguing that it was unduly lenient.

Lord Doherty, sitting with Lord Matthews and Lord Beckett, quashed the original sentence and increased the prison term to eight years.

Once released back into the community, he will also be supervised for three years and can be sent back to jail if he breaches the licence conditions.

Original sentencing judge Lord Colbeck stated that the woman had suffered "psychological harm" as a result of the attack.

The judge highlighted that Nawshowani targeted someone who was "vulnerable" through her consumption of alcohol.

He noted that Nawshowani accepted "no responsibility" for the rape and instead blamed the victim by "accusing her of lying about what happened".

Appeal judge Lord Doherty said: "In our view the sentence passed did not adequately reflect the premeditated and predatory nature of the attack by a man of mature years on a vulnerable young woman."

He added: "It is clear from her victim impact statement that the attack's effects on her have been very serious.

"We also consider that the sentence did not sufficiently serve the purposes of protection of the public; of marking the court's disapproval of the respondent's conduct; and of deterring others from offending in a similar way.

"Women are entitled to feel safe when they travel by taxi.

"Those who prey upon vulnerable women who require a taxi and sexually assault them should be in no doubt that the courts will take a very serious view of that behaviour."

you see adverts popping up on t'internet advertising how much work you can do using Ai in a third or less time so probably someone that wants to earn money using AI to gather information and write articles for publication

I suspect this is someone who offered a free lift home and tried it on rather than someone who went out with the intention of finding a victim to rape after all if this was a deliberate criminal act why would you take the victim to your money laundering turkish barbers because you obviously would be easily traced. I think like many men recently arrived from central or southern asia he assumed because she was drunk she wanted sex. In societies where alcohol consumption is not permitted they have no conception of what drunken behaviour actually is.

This is mostly about the trial, and is based on a radio interview.

Not much evidence here as to how she came to be in the barber shop with no sign of coercion, but in the radio interview (and below) she said she froze and was worried she might be killed.

Also says below that she was 'slightly impaired' by alcohol.

Woman's ordeal after abduction and rape by fake taxi driver

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c2d80457d1ro

A woman who was abducted and raped by a man pretending to be a taxi driver has spoken about her terrifying ordeal.

On 7 August 2022, the woman - who is anonymous but we are calling Sophie - thought she was in a taxi taking her to her home in Glasgow's Dennistoun area.

But after dropping off her friend, the driver, Barzan Nawshowani, took her into a barber shop where he worked, and raped her.

He was initially jailed for six years, but following a Crown appeal this was increased to eight years with an extra three years of supervision.

However, Sophie feels that as the crime was so serious he should have been given 15-16 years.

New guidelines for the sentencing of rape offences came into effect in Scotland last month - with higher jail terms for cases like this.

"Sometimes you get that feeling of just lock him up and throw away the key," Sophie said.

"Despite the appeal, the charges were abduction and rape. I think those two together, I think it needed to be a lot longer, 15, 16 years."

Sophie's friend had flagged the "taxi" after a night out in Glasgow.

"He took her home first - which we thought was odd because she lived a bit further away – then I was taken to Dennistoun," Sophie said.

"But the car pulled up quite a bit away from where I was supposed to be.

"My alarms were starting to go off that something's not quite right here. But I'd had a few drinks and was slightly impaired. I thought just get home."

She said the driver said he worked at the nearby barber shop, KS Turkish Barbers, and unlocked and opened the shutters.

Sophie felt something bad was going to happen and her body froze in fear.

"I was going through my head 'how do I get out of this?' but my body couldn't move," she said.

"He initially opened the door and from there it was very fast. The next thing I remember is being in the middle of that barber shop with the door locked and the shutters down and it was such a quick turnaround.

"Mainly in my head was 'just do as you are told'. My immediate thought was that he might kill me."

Sophie saw a back door and thought there might be a back exit but found this was not the case.

"He then approached me and it became quite aggressive and violent," she said. "I just froze again.

"He was a lot taller than me, older than me, stronger than me. There was not anything that anyone in that circumstance could do differently."

Nawshowani then raped her.

"I was saying 'no, stop' and crying my eyes out. It was so intense and scary. I don't think I have been more terrified in all my life.

"When it was all over he went out first, unlocked the door, shutters came up and I ran out and collapsed onto the street."

Sophie rang her friend and ran home.

"When I got in, I couldn't lift myself up off the floor. I couldn't control anything," she said.

"I wanted to stay there and have the ground swallow me. I was more terrified I would be blamed. There was a shame even from that point.

"It was something you should never have but that was the immediate thing for me. My friend said 'no, I'm going to report this'."

Within a couple of days police had arrested Nawshowani.

'I felt like I was under scrutiny'

Sophie was concerned about how the rape would affect her family so didn't tell them straight away.

"I waited about a week before I told my parents," she said. "It was that feeling of shame, I was so worried how other people would take it and their reactions rather than my own.

"I was on autopilot – everything was going on around me but I wasn't aware of it.

"When I told my mum, it was silence for a minute. She was trying not to cry for me. Then she said we want you to come home. We are going to work through this.

"I wanted to put it away and ignore it and I knew the second I saw their faces it would hit me - and it did. Like a truck."

She added: "It was hard seeing my dad so upset and processing it all – it was one of the hardest things of the whole experience seeing them upset."

During the trial, Sophie gave her evidence via video link.

She described the experience as "horrific".

"When it came to the day of giving evidence, I just crumbled," she said. "It was panic attack after panic attack.

"I felt like I was under scrutiny, especially with the cross-examination."

Sophie met the prosecutor before the trial and said "thankfully he was very nice". He told her his cross examination wasn't personal but he was just doing his job.

This initially brought her some comfort until it came to the cross examination when she was asked if it was "just a night out gone wrong".

"I just really put my walls up and was like, 'no'," she said. "I think it's the last thing that you're prepared for almost because you're prepared to relive it all and you know it's going to happen and it's emotional, but that defence questioning, it brings out that anger in you."

When Nawshowani was first sentenced Sophie initially felt vindicated.

"It's validating because it's like, 'okay, yeah, I am right'," she said. "This did happen and it is taken seriously.

"But then shortly after I was like 'that is not a lot'."

The sentence was increased to eight years after a Crown appeal.

Sophie said she was happy about this but said it wasn't enough time for her to heal before Nawshowani is released.

She said she has to constantly remind herself that she shouldn't feel any shame.

"The shame shouldn't be with me and the control shouldn't be with him," she said.

"The shame should be with him and the control with me."

Still no real clue as to how they thought the vehicle was a taxi, and thus flagged it down etc.

I don't think the interview actually used the word 'flagged' - she just seems to say that her friend came to her and told her that she'd got a taxi, but precisely how that came about isn't clear.

Anyway, I haven't listened to all of this yet, and think most of it is about the trial process etc. But it's around 27 minutes, and is available here. It can be listened to online, or downloaded. It's a quick enough no-hassle download, but to listen to it online seems to require log in to the BBC's site, or registration if no account. So a lot easier just to download it if anyone wants to listen to it:
