'Dishonest' driver with poor grasp of English refused taxi licence

https://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/news/l ... h-34431719

A taxi driver has been refused a private hire licence after a council were concerned they did not appear to have “sufficient command of the English language”.

South Cambridgeshire District Council’s licensing review panel heard from the driver and a licensing officer last week.

The meeting was held in private without any members of the press or public.

The driver has not been named, but the minutes summarising the panel’s decision were released.

The panel said they were concerned the driver’s poor English would mean they could not fully comply with the licence conditions.

They said the oral evidence given by the driver “did not match the legislation at the time” and the panel said they “appeared to be dishonest”.

The driver was also found to have “multiple road offences” and “several incidents of lack of awareness and failure to comply with the law”.

The panel said the driver “failed to understand and accurately complete the council application form” and refused to grant a private hire licence.
