This is all pretty formulaic, apart from the obvious mega-clanger

And the usual councillor blather. And it's not entirely clear whether this will actually go ahead - looks like it's up to one high-powered official whether it goes out to public consultation.

North Tyneside taxi drivers call for 8% fare hike amid rising costs

The area's hackney carriage drivers say the costs of doing business continue to mount, prompting an increase in rates.

Taxi drivers in North Tyneside are calling for an 8% fare hike to combat worsening business conditions and the cost of living.

The North Tyneside Hackney Carriage Association (NTHCA) is urging North Tyneside Council to approve an increase in fares, resulting in an average cost per mile of £5.52 for a three-mile journey, at around 8% according to council calculations. Extra charges, including fines for car theft, have been proposed to rise from £125 to £130, and charges for dogs and other animals (except service dogs) to rise from £3 to £4.

The proposed rises apply to what are referred to as ‘hackney carriages’, which can be hailed on the street or at a taxi rank and not vehicles that can be pre-booked.

The NTHCA’s main reason for the request, alongside the cost of living, is as follows:

    - Fuel prices are at their highest in 18 months, at 194p a litre for super diesel.
    - Price of replacement vehicles up by 20%
    - tyre costs up by 10%
    - Vehicle parts up by 16%
    - Vehicle costs up by 20%

However, councillors have voiced concerns about the proposed hike, particularly regarding North Tyneside’s elderly residents.

Regulation and review committee members, coun John O’Shea said: “I just don’t think we have got the right balance. I notice that the taxi trade has had significant uplifts in fuel and insurance and things like that, so they’ve been suffering for a little while.

“On the other hand, we have residents in North Tyneside who have been suffering as well with the cost of living. I know the government has some ideas around trying to address that.

“My suggestion to the director of public health is to look at a balanced arrangement, not the 8% that has been suggested.”

The taxi fare proposals, pending approval from the director of public health, will be made public for at least 14 days and will be open to objections.

Can't be bothered crunching the numbers, but if that's £16.56 for a three-mile trip then that certainly seems steep :-o

 That looks like a sickie charge. But can't work out what the spelling mistake or whatever could be :-k

And maybe 'fine' isn't the best description either.

And the, er, wildlife charge certainly seems on the steep side :-o

If it was 18% I could maybe see his point. But in the current climate 8% hardly seems off the scale. And to my mind piddling little rises like 3% or whatever are hardly worth all the hoohah and hassle

Surprise, surprise, the 'fines for car theft' is actually the 'charge for soiling the carriage' :-o

Where did you get your incorrect information from, if it was from the daily liar, I will excuse your mistake of believing every thing in the press is true.

The correct figures for the requested review are

Tariff 1.
1st Mile £5.35
2nd Mile £3.00
3rd Mile £3.00 which gives a £3.78 mile average for a 3 mile journey, every mile after 1st mile is £3.00

Tariff 2
1st Mile £6.77
2nd Mile £3.42
3rd Mile £3.42 which gives a £4.50 mile average for a 3 mile journey, every mile after 1st mile is £3.42

What the Council Officers put in their report was totally wrong and misleading.
