TAXI fares will not be going up in Worcester following a U-turn by the city council and cabbies.
In June, the council agreed to increase the maximum charges for Hackney carriage journeys at the request of Worcester Taxi Association.

Rates were set to go up from £4.30 to £5 on standard journeys (Tariff 1) and from £5.50 to £6.40 for Tariff 2 trips, which are journeys between midnight and 7am, on Sundays, Bank Holidays and selected other dates.

But now the association says a survey of its members has revealed a lack of support for the proposal.
In response to a statutory consultation, the chairman of Worcester Taxi Association said the fare increase “has been rejected by a large number of the members”.

“It’s not the right decision in my opinion and it is not helpful for the trade.

“We are going to arrange a meeting with the trade for further discussion. We will inform you of the outcome and any new proposals.”

Committee chair Richard Udall said he was “frustrated” the council had acted on the taxi association’s request on the understanding it had consulted its members, only to find out it hadn’t done so at the time.

“They told us in very forceful terms that they had the full support of their members and this is something we had to do in order to save their trade," he told a meeting of the council's licensing and environmental health committee on Monday (September 7).

“We listened and we consulted and it turns out they hadn’t consulted their trade and when they did do so, 67 [drivers] said no and two said yes.

“I find that a difficult process to go through,” said Cllr Udall. “However I do accept that perhaps the taxi trade have changed their mind and no longer support a taxi fare increase like they did previously.

“With that in mind I will be asking this committee to abandon any increase in taxi fares and to continue with the 2022 charges.”

One taxi driver had suggested increasing meter costs instead of the tariff. Councillor Jill Desayrah asked if this was being looked at.

Cllr Udall said the idea had been floated previously and the taxi association “did not like it”.

“What we’re going to have to do is have an in-depth discussion at a future taxi drivers’ forum to find out exactly what they do want and how they want us to do it,” he said.

“I don’t want to come back again in the future and ask you to have an increase and then come back and knock it down again. We need to have consistency and awareness of what they’re actually asking and be sure they are representative of their members as well.”
