The fare - unless you're daft - is agreed in advance. In the old days they may, or may not, have known how to reach your destination.

Good advice, only problem is Addison lee set their fares in advance, minimum £7, and a lot more than proper London taxis charge.

Riiiiiiiiiip off.

A Green Badge buddy of mine applied for a position at ALee :)

According to the data sheet given to applicants, it's £10 incl. the phone booking charge and £13 for 5+ persons.

A sat nav and a silver Mercedes does not a taxi driver make.

One, he must be mad.

Two, I don't get the figures you've used here? Is that a standard fee plus the mileage? :?

Satnav Vs The Knowledge.

So, a 256mb memory card is better than the human brain?

As I've posted before, I like many others now own one of the TomTom units.

They're great out of town in the leafy suburbs, but in town the signal constantly excuses itself, and it sends you down some funny routes, dead end streets, against one way systems, tells you to U turn where they're banned, no left turns, so i'm happy it will never better what I know upstairs.

Or you could end up being told to drive off a cliff in Yorkshire! Crackpot by name, crackpot by nature. Last year on "Top Gear" a woman wanted to drive from Glasgow to Cornwall avoiding Motorways, her "intelligent" Sat-nav advised, Stranraer-Ireland-France-Plymouth. Still, imagine that, with the meter ticking away...
