HEADLINE: Student raped in taxi mistake
A student was raped after she got into a car she thought was a taxi, police said yesterday.
The woman, 20, was attacked after she left a nightclub in Birmingham. She was driven to an isolated area and then dropped off in the Edgbaston area of the city. A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said the victim assumed the man was a private hire driver, and got into the vehicle at 3.25am on Friday after leaving The Works nightclub, in Broad Street.
Police are trying to trace the driver of a dark coloured Honda Accord that had five-spoke alloy wheels, seen in the area. It did not display any private hire plates or markings, the spokeswoman added.
The driver was described as eastern European with severe scarring to his face from his eyes down. A man in his early 40s was arrested on suspicion of rape and released pending the results of forensic tests.
