Windows were smashed on the dead taxi driver's vehicle
An Asian taxi driver has been killed in a racially-motivated gang attack in Huddersfield, police have said.
Mohammed Pervaiz, 41, was found with serious injuries at Field Head, Golcar, late on Saturday night. He died later at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.
A post-mortem examination found the father-of three died from head injuries received in a serious assault.
Four males and a female, aged between 16 and 19 years old, have been arrested in connection with the attack.
The victim came from Birkby in Huddersfield.
None of those arrested has yet been charged.
Detective Superintendent Tim Forber, who is leading the inquiry, urged anyone who could have seen the attack to contact police.
We are shocked and appalled by what has happened
Lib Dem councillor Andrew Marchington
"Extensive inquiries are under way to establish the events leading to the tragic murder of Mr Pervaiz, who was responding to a request for a fare when he was killed," he said.
"Early indications suggest that more than five people were present at the time of the attack and we are keen to speak with anyone who may have information about those responsible.
"Whilst we are keeping an open mind regarding the motive for this attack, it is believed racist language was used towards the victim at the time. For this reason the incident is being treated as racially aggravated at this stage."
Police have set up an incident room and anyone with any information is asked to ring 01924 431000.
Local Lib Dem councillor Andrew Marchington said: "We are shocked and appalled by what has happened. Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the dead man involved in this incident.
"People throughout Golcar will be shocked by this news.
"The area has no more racial tensions than any other part of West Yorkshire," he added.
