A GUNMAN opened fire on a man as he sat in the back of a Hackney cab.
The 22-year-old is in a serious condition after being hit in the leg yesterday.
He and a friend were in a cab travelling along Kirkdale Road, after being picked up on Scotland Road at about 8.15am.
When the taxi stopped at traffic lights at the junction of Kirk-dale Road with Great Mersey Street and Jason Street, a man approached the car, opened one of the passenger doors and fired shots into the taxi.
The taxi drove into Smith Street, where the other passenger ran off. It is not known whether he had suffered any injuries.
The victim, from Tuebrook, was taken to the Royal Liverpool hospital where doctors say he is stable.
Although this appears to have been a targeted attack, detectives say it is too early in the investigation to speculate on any motive for it.
Kirkdale Road was closed yesterday morning while officers carried out their searches.
CCTV footage from the surrounding area is also being looked at.
A police spokeswoman said: "One of the men got out of the taxi and ran off. The second man was obviously injured."
Witnesses should call the police hotline on 0800 458 1211 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
