One small point. If I was to flag one of these vehicles and ask the driver to take me say 20 miles from the point of hire which was still in his area but meant he had to travel 10 miles on a motorway would they be safe, and secondly if he refused to take me would he not be in breach of his licence.

Aren't they allowed on the motorway?

IMO they shouldn't be allowed on the roads, but I see the points made.

From what I hear and see from the lads in Brighton the Tuk Tuks just keep breaking down, and end up costing the owners sheds loads of money. :D

A few years ago, A certain person tried to apply for 20 hackney licences to go on to horse-drawn carriages, the argument that was put forward against. was, that there is only one hackney Licence, and if the person was to stop a horse drawn hackney he would have to comply to the same conditions as a motorised hackney,
The point I was making is that a tuk tuk must be able when licensed as a hackney to fulfil the same duties , in other words travelling a mile or two is one thing but would it be realistic to travel 20 in one, or would they be given special dispensation to pick and choose their customers which you and I know is illegal .

If they simply wanted to travel a set route they could apply for a omnibus licence, I personally do not think that these vehicles are safe to carry out the duties expected from hackney carriages and any council that Licenced them as such would be failing the people they represent , purely and simply as a safety issue.

On BBC Look North last night, (12/01/07) a Skegness "businessman" wants to bring Tuk-tuks to the Skegness promenade. They have had horse drawn carriages there for many years, at least in the Summer season. East Lindsey District Council have refused to licence them (the tuk-tuks, that is) as Hackney Carriages, as they do not meet the required standard, so hurrah for them. (a case of local councils know what is best for their own district?)
He is also said to be considering having a "stretch" Tuk-tuk!!!! Watch this space...

I don't know if we ever envisaged Tuc Tuc's plying for hire on Taxi ranks but nevertheless that is what we have in Purbeck? I suppose there are other authorities that fit the profile of Purbeck but who are we to tell Purbeck what they can and cannot license?

When I spoke to Marc self, the owner of Roadliner Transport, he said, if the Tuc Tuc proves popular he would definitely consider licensing some more? We definitely live in a changing world but when the DfT brings in mandatory WAV conditions I wonder how these Tuc Tuc's will adapt? Perhaps we can look forward to a WAV converted Tuc Tuc in the future who knows? Perhaps if such a vehicle was ever produced then all licensing authorities might be at the mercy of Tuc Tuc's? Who knows, perhaps some TDO subscribers might even prefer to own one?

I find the necessity to adapt scenario very interesting because most of our best inventions have come by way of necessity?

I think the bigger ones can take them in via the rear.

But aren't the spinal folks against rear entry?

I watched the DVD "Children of Men" last week. It's set in the future, 2030, I think. The opening scenes are set in London. Guess what the "futuristic Taxi's" are. I suppose they would be TX 21's?

I was under the impression that Purbeck was the first to license a tuc tuc as a hackney carriage but according to the tucshop they are licensed all over the place? Here's what the Tucshop says.

The 650 has already gained Hackney Taxi status in many areas including Oxford, Bath, Weston, and Cumbria

Can anyone confirm this before I phone around tomorrow?

Regards
