Station to operate taxi marshals

Licensed Hackney carriages are one safe way to travel home

Taxi marshals are set to be trialled at a Berkshire train station to clamp down on illegal operators.

Reading's Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership will employ two marshals for a three-month pilot to ensure people get a safe and fair journey.

They will operate in Station Road and Station Hill, Reading, between 2100 GMT and 0330 GMT on Fridays and Saturdays from the start of March.

It follows a successful similar trial held over the recent Christmas period.

Marshals' duties will include the supervision of late night taxi queues, ensuring queues are orderly and queue-jumping is minimised.

Haji Banaras, chairman of Reading Taxi Association, said: "This is a big step forward in stopping private hire cabs, which are not allowed to ply for trade or use the ranks, from operating in the area.

"If these unlicensed cabbies know there are marshals patrolling the area, then they will go elsewhere."

Sorry to disagree, but marshalls are surely there to make the public feel safer standing on ranks?

A complete waste of money...in three months time your marshalls will be richer and will have gone....a camera system would last forever.

As long as they realise that PH ARE allowed to pick up booked fares!!
We sometimes get stroppy Hac's approaching asking if the fares booked. I just tell em to **** off and take my number and ask the LO to check, i'm buggered if i'm goin to explain my work to some overcharging knob, because he bangs on my window and shouts!
