Chester disabled woman’s taxi firm dispute

A DISABLED woman was “disgusted” after feeling abandoned by a taxi
firm which took her to a rural village but would not take her home unless
she coughed up £30.

Eventually Chester Radio Taxis agreed to deliver Jean Simm, 78, back to
her Waverton home in one of its Hackney carriages capable of carrying
her electric wheelchair – and for the usual £8.10 fare.

The taxi firm claims the issue is “not black and white” because of
particular issues associated with conveying people in wheelchairs.

Surely they aren't saying the other £22 is a booking fee. :-k

can anyone tell me what the legal position is with electric w/chairs and side loading wheelchair access,

in my scudo the wheelchair harness straps and belts are for rear facing chairs and most electric chairs are unable to manouver to this position ,

also the ramp is on the nearside so getting the punter too drive themselves in is not a problem but watching them trying to reverse out is scarey

i've told the p/h company that i'm on for that i won't take electric w/chairs anymore but how do i stand as a hackney (can i refuse someone off the rank/street ?) as i cannot secure the w/chair or the punter properly

Clear breach of the DDA. (unless they charge £30 to everyone going to and from this place)

Health and safety issue. Do your own risk assessment and refuse if you consider it dangerous.

Could it be that the outbound journey started within the controlled and licensed district but the return starts from outside the vehicles licensed area?

I would liaise with your LO and ask him that question.

But at the end of the day if the wheelchair is too big, or even the punter sitting on it too big, and/or you can't secure them properly, then you don't take the job.

But get your LO to agree with that first. If he doesn't then that's another matter.
