Taxi pervert groped female passenger - then makes her pay for her fare


A TAXI driver sexually assaulted a young female passenger - then charged her the full fare to drop her off at her home.

Stetson-wearing James Hendry - who is known as Cowboy Joe - made his 22-year-old victim pay despite subjecting her to an ordeal lasting several minutes.

The 58-year-old cabbie repeatedly groped the terrified woman while driving with one hand.

Yesterday at Perth Sheriff Court, Hendry, of Maxtone Crescent, Crieff, Perthshire, was placed on the sex offenders' register.

He admitted sexually assaulting the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, during the drive between Gavelmore Street and Monzie, Crieff, on March 15.

Fiscal depute Stuart Richardson told the court that the victim had been at a pal's house after a night out and called a taxi to take her home.

Hendry, who she knew of from her work in a local pub, arrived and she got into the front seat.

Mr Richards added: "The first thing he did wrong was to put his hand across and touch her breasts.

"Then he put his hand across again and inside her dress and touched her breast on the skin.

"Unfortunately, he then managed to get his hand under her dress and inside her pants and he touched her private parts.

"When they arrived at her home, she gave him the money for the fare and got out of the taxi."

The woman phoned the police and told them that she had been sexually assaulted by a taxi driver she knew by the nickname "Cowboy Joe".

Police were able to trace Hendry and he admitted that he had been touching the woman as he drove her home.

Sheriff Celia Sanderson deferred sentence on Hendry for reports until January 21 next year.

Woman groped in taxi


A WEST Perthshire taxi driver who groped a female passenger must go back to court on January 21.

Yesterday at Perth Sheriff Court, James George Samuel Hendry (58), of Maxtone Terrace, Gilmerton, admitted sexually assaulting the 22-year-old woman on various roads in Crieff last March 15.

Fiscal depute Stuart Richardson said the woman left her work in a local pub at 9.45pm and went back to a friend’s house to socialise.

After deciding to go home by taxi, she was picked up by Hendry, who was “someone she knew from the bar”.

She was sitting in the front passenger seat when Hendry reached across and touched her leg.

“He then put his hand inside her dress and touched her skin,” said Mr Richardson.

“He then stopped that but managed to get his hand under her dress and inside her pants.

“He touched her on the private parts.”

When the taxi reached its destination, the woman went inside and “immediately burst into floods of tears”.

Hendry, who is well known in the Crieff area for wearing a cowboy hat to work, was traced by police and admitted the offence.

“He took the view that he thought the female might have for some reason liked the things he had done,” added the fiscal.

Hendry was placed on the sex offenders’ register until the case calls again on January 21 and background reports were ordered.

A good argument for real taxis. ne'er the public and the driver shall meet. Protection for both parties.

Coupled with CCTV, this could stop incidents like this from happening.

Not sure what you mean by a 'real taxis' I think perhaps you are referring to the HC. It would be great if it were true and it would have my full backing then but I'm sure I've read somewhere that there have been victims of similar and worse incidents inside HC's.

I mean taxis where a bulkhead separates driver and passengers.

Yes, no system is foolproof. The best we can do is the best we can do.

And the best we can do is as I've described above.

Just like the best the council can do on a taxi demand and supply situation is to allow the market itself to decide the service provision level. Only if that proves inadequate should they then become involved to boost numbers, by reducing licence fees, encouraging entry to the trade etc.

Anything short of the best they can do leaves local authorities open to a justifiable charge that they are not doing everything the can to meet public need.

Simple as.

I agree but there are lots of things the council can do and don't do. Sexual preditors are like thieves in so far as they are oportunists and the councils make it so easy for them to become taxi drivers in the first place. Lets be honest you only need a clean driving licence for 12 months and a CRB check some areas don't have knowledge tests so not all places need those. It's a mockery of professional services. I've always maintained it is far to easy to become a taxi driver and therefore makes it far to easy for the vunerable to be taken advantage of. It's not even necessary to prove you are a competent driver they seem content in the knowledge that for one day you were able to drive a vehicle sufficiently well to pass a test and that could have been years ago. You don't hear taxi drivers saying that things should be made more difficult to attain the status of a professional taxi driver in fact they are currently complaining about the NVQ/Btec. Having said that I don't blame them because it is a bit of a waste of time as the NVQ/Btec is not designed to fail anybody it's just a glorified health & safety/customer service exercise and I don't believe it goes far enough.

At least this chap held his hands up and never made it worse for his victim by dragging her to court to prove her point lets be thankful for small mercys shall we.

‘Cowboy’ taxi driver groped his passenger


A TAXI driver who groped a female passenger needs to be further assessed by social workers, a Perth sheriff has decided.

James George Samuel Hendry (58), of Maxtone Terrace, Gilmerton, must go back to Perth Sheriff Court next month after admitting he sexually assaulted a 22-year-old woman on various roads in Crieff.

The court heard in December how the woman left her work in a local pub at 9.45pm last March 15 and went back to a friend’s house to socialise.

After deciding to go home by taxi, she was picked up by Hendry, who habitually wears a cowboy hat, who she knew from the bar.

Fiscal depute Stuart Richardson said she was sitting in the front passenger seat when Hendry suddenly touched her leg.

He then touched her under her dress and, by reaching inside her underwear, on the private parts.

When the taxi reached its destination, the driver made the woman pay for her nightmare journey.

Hendry, who is known as ‘Cowboy Joe’ was placed on the sex offenders’ register after he pled guilty last month.

He was due to be sentenced on Wednesday, but Sheriff Lindsay Foulis deferred the case further due to the incomplete nature of background reports compiled thus far.

Pending further interviews Hendry must attend with staff at the Tay Project for monitoring sex offenders, he will be dealt with at the court on February 18.

Sex attack taxi man avoids jail

The court heard that the woman had to pay the full fare after being attacked
A taxi driver who sexually assaulted a woman passenger in Perthshire has been given three years probation and placed on the sex offenders register.

James Hendry, 58, from Crieff, attacked the 22-year-old woman as he drove her between Crieff and Monzie on 15 March.

He then made her hand over the full fare for the trip.

At Perth Sheriff Court, Sheriff Lindsay Foulis told Hendry that the decision not to send him to prison had been "a close call."

The court heard how the cabbie kept one hand on the wheel and used the other to repeatedly grope his passenger.

After she got out the car, she burst into tears in front of a friend and they called the police.

She was able to identify Hendry because he sometimes came into her work.

She told police that she had been attacked by the taxi driver she knew as Cowboy Joe.

Cowboy Joe was Hendry's nickname because he always wore a Stetson hat.

Hendry, from Maxtone Crescent, Crieff, admitted sexually assaulting the woman.

Dundee already have an enhanced street test plus all driver must go through an enhanced disclosure Scotland plus they all have to produce a self employed tax ref no. Dundee is also trialling out cctv and so far it has eradicated many of the problems associated with the job during its 4 month trial. Having cctv across the board would benefit everyone & give passengers & driver some assurances of safety and this also eradicates any problems as the hard drive can be viewed at anytime.

CCTV in all vehicles is an excellent idea but it's down to expense and currently most drivers couldn't afford the extra bill

The system we have is around £500 to £600 and I am sure if this could be purchased by trade in block I'm sure we could lose a third of that price after all how much is your life worth?
