'Remapping' reduces taxi firm's fuel costs by 20 per cent

A Staffordshire taxi firm is beating the economic gloom and cutting back on fuel consumption with new technology which saved it £3,600 last year.

Five Star Taxis, based in Heath Hayes near Cannock, is introducing the cost-cutting “remapping” procedure across its fleet – which could result in savings of about £10,000 a year.

Remapping involves digitally-retuning factory settings of a vehicle’s engine with specialist equipment and software.

By adjusting the air-fuel ratios, fuel volume, fuel pressure, torque limiters, boost pressure and various other key parameters savings in fuel consumption are possible.

Five Star Taxis director Paul Barnes said the remapping technology could provide vital costing savings for firms in the economic downturn and is urging businesses to try the technology.

The know-how has also received the backing of the Southern Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce who said the potential cost savings could help some firms survive the recession.

Mr Barnes said: “We’ve seen savings of at least a fifth in our fuel costs in the cars that have been remapped, that’s made a massive difference.

“It clearly does help relieve a bit of the pressure that is on in the economic climate.”

Mike Walton, who remapped the cars for the taxi firm, said customers of Rapid Remap, his company which is also based in Health Hayes, had seen a significant improvement in fuel consumption.

“Typically, I’ve seen a 10-20 per cent improvement in fuel consumption in the cars I’ve remapped but some people have seen even better cost savings than that,” he said.

“It’s not only businesses that can benefit but any car or van can be remapped, in fact 80 per cent of our trade is with private car-owners, and it also helps the environment by cutting emissions.”

Simon Tulitt, director of policy at the Southern Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “With savings of up to 20 per cent possible on fuel costs this could be the crucial factor for some firms to remain in business in these difficult trading conditions.”

Someone remind me why manufacturers don't set up motors that way in the first place? :?

If it's saving fuel and emissions, there must be a downside....Performance?

What about the Increase in Insurance premiums to ensure the vehicle is fully covered as before, any savings could be more than lost by Extra insurance costs....not like Insurance companies to miss a chance on creaming off some extra cash if they think youve been tampering with the vehicles original manufacturers settings..

mass

production

in days gone by when racers in certain formula could only use production parts one pastime was to go through thousands of identical parts to find the set which could give better performance, things like valve springs and pistons, with the springs the strongest reduce valve bounce at high RPB, with pistons any well-matched set would give better balance/smoother rotating mass, the lightest flywheel would give faster throttle response and so on.

with re-mapping factories flash over 1 bios/firmware for the whole range being built without a care for the individual vehicle variations, by the time all the variations are combined 1 vehicle can feel/drive a lot different to an identical one.
