I've had a crackin' few weeks down here in the southern provinces....and we're deregulated!!

Friday nights are definitely a lot quieter down here with taxis queuing every where, they are killing the trade with over 250 extra cabs on the road in two years,we may be a Capital City but there is a shortage of money and work.

Both Friday night and Saturday night I was non-stop until I headed home around 4am, and there was still loads of work for the taking.

I hope your not part of the 8am - home before 5pm crew? I'll never know how these drivers do it, one: with the constant gridlock, and two: working off rate one all day.

Not for me.

Total crap in the Borders Thursday and Friday.
Thursday night was dire, there was only 16 folk in the only club open with 125 cabs waiting
Friday was steady through the day and dire at night

I'm nights myself. Think it's been pony to be honest, most people I know saying the same.

I came out of the Intercontinental this morning at about 09.30 and walked up Park lane to the garage by the BMW showroom. I was amazed howmany cabs were sat around in the sunshine. I counted over 60 by the time I past the Grosvenor.

Couldn't believe how many were out and about that early on a Sunday.

I wonder, as you have alluded to some time ago, where these 60 taxi's will be at 1am, when the works flowing? Sadly I'm unable to work this evening, but I know I'd be busy if I were.

Drivers get too used to the boom times and forget things like 1993/ 94 very quickly. That was a recession, the current slow down is a mere blip.

I'd say the biggest threat to our work is not the current (almost media generated) slow down in the economy, but the rising and unabated cost of Oil.
That's the one to worry about, because as people's weekly shop doubles, then they stop going out as much.

I'm lucky in London, as a great deal of the countries wealth lies in and around the capital.

I wish I'd put a little more effort into finding a vehicle capable of conversion to LPG.

The price of diesel has increased 7p/litre in the couple of months that I've had the car while LPG is still the same price at the same outlet. GGrrrrr!

Surely the PCO don't let out drivers, the drivers just pass the knowledge.

What percentage of your take is fuel costs?

We used to have a solid 10% now it is creeping over 13%. Rising costs and purchasing cars not based on fuel economy are responsible for the increase.

Pickings in Edinburgh are definitely thinner on the ground. Yes, you can still have a good night but you can’t afford to be fussy and you’ve got to work the hours. Being kept going is about as best you can hope for.
