Cab crashed into house after excelerator jammed

echonews!

A "TAXI" ploughed into the front room of a flat after the cab’s accelerator jammed, a Taxi firm boss has claimed.

The Echo has also learned the silver Ford Galaxy had been tested for defects by the council just three months earlier.

The car ended up in Georgia Luxton’s front room, in Beccles Court, Station Avenue, Wickford, and is now with police who are carrying out further tests.

A man, who said he was the owner of Brown’s Taxis, but refused to be named, said the crash by his driver was caused by a “mechanical problem”.

He said: “Our cars undergo two council tests a year and an MOT.

“In this instance the accelerator was stuck. It was a mechanical problem.

“We have been going for more than 60 years and have 30 cars. We check every car three to four times a week.”

Pete Le Riche, a Basildon Council spokesman, said the cars underwent in-depth safety checks.

He said: “To ensure this is done, the owners of these vehicles are required by law to present the vehicles for inspection every six months.

“It is the responsibility of the owners to service and maintain them. The private hire vehicle L505 CMU was last inspected in June.

“However we cannot release the results of the inspection, as the vehicle is subject to an ongoing police investigation.”

Essex Police spokesman, Bill Stock, confirmed a police investigation was underway.

Miss Luxton, 23, and her son Taylor, five, were woken just after 5am when the taxi crashed into her flat last Wednesday. Both were unhurt.

The taxi driver, believed to be in his forties, managed to get out of the vehicle himself and was taken by paramedics to Basildon Hospital for treatment for minor injuries.

You need to pull the key out of the ignition to engage the steering lock.
