Dusty there are restrictions up in Scotland re pub licences, window cleaner licences etc.You just can`t open up premises anywhere but existing licences can be transferrred to anyone (fit and proper of course)
If anyone can just open up a pub where you live please let me know and i`ll come down there to work.I`ve been trying to get a pub licence in the village for years, can`t get one due to enough pubs in the area (unmet demand, sound familiar?),window cleaners are also restricted, same case scenario. So you have to get existing licences and premises by purchasing them or taking over unprofitable business`s.

Yes, you have a point with the pubs, it's the same in England as far as I know.

But I think it's supposed to stop over-indulgence, not just to provide one section of the taxi trade with a better living than others, as taxi license quotas seem to do.

I think you're incorrect about window cleaners - it's probably just a charachter check, as with many other trades/professions which involve contact with the public.

Ditto butchers, bakers and candlestick makers etc.

Dusty

So although there are restrictions on pub, widow cleaners etc, any person can still own any of these business`s by getting the existing licence transferred.Try getting a taxi licence transferred up here,it`s restrictive business practice (EU directive),only difference is that nobody up here want`s to spend a vast ammount of money on going ahead with the council. All will be rectified shortly when la`s will be under the one goverment directive on licencing and other matters.
 be happy

Which EU directive?

If anything's in breach of EU law it's the license quotas giving rise to plate values in the first place.

If anyone tried to take legal action on the basis that not allowing license transfers is a restrictive practice then they'd be laughed out of court.

Indeed, that's why no one has taken any action because there's no action to be taken.

Even if the plates were only worth 10k in Dundee, the current collective worth of the plates (or monopoly rent, as Halcrow call it in the OFT report!!) is £10m - surely that would justify taking action, if there was any action to take?

Anyway, isn't this all a bit academic if Dundee has de-limited?

Dusty

PS Thanks to Scot - I'd missed Mr Villager's post!!

Scot , re licences,I was not talking about Dundee but about Angus council
I have tried to get a public house licence for years even went as far as buying premises, had no objections from the public to the premises becoming a pub but still got kicked into touch, one busiuness partner of mine tried to open a rest/takeaway in a shopping precinct got knocked back because there was one a mile and a half away and that another the existing rest/takeaway met public demand even though it sold different cuisine from my friend`s,he`s going for a judicial review on the matter and also the reporter.

I suspect that the lads up in Dundee are working hard to pay their legal bills.

According to the Scottish Taxi site, the bill was between £25,000 and £30,000 months ago. What it is now, without the other sides costs could be anything. :?

There is a price for having poxy union leadership.

That price is being paid by the Dundee lads, and recently paid by the Wirral and Castlepoint lads.

Scot, You are right I could have stayed but having been a "GADJIE" most of my life I decided to move to the VILLAGE,better class of "GADJIE" and the spam is cheaper(so is the council tax).By the way you are right it is a bit quiet on the DUNDEE front, I think that the "GADJIES" have accepted that more hacks will be on soon.

next thursday is the deadline i think, some lucky chap has a police test on the 23rd (wish it was me)most will be on by the second week in jan one or two may have decided not to bother with wavs time will tell, anyone know why 203020 have not submitted applications?maybe they are waiting to see how many are prepared to invest in vehicles the biggest majority of wavs will appear feb right at a quiet time maybe 203020 are playing it safe, i had my head nipped at the weekend from a couple who read the courier report about the dta objecting to the wavs it seems the public think all taxi drivers are behind the dta how wrong can they be?
its a pity the dta didn,t print a list of names of objectors so the public can
see the truth, graham stevens made a wise move saying no comment and passing the buck to their lawyers the dissabled lobby have a lot of sway in anything that includes council liscences plus the press would have had a field day on anyone dta or union for denying the dissabled their basic right to a service that everyone else has...
