Very true Nigel,
the dipsticks at town halls have caused this problem, throwing licenses out like confetti. And then they send their parking wardens to harrass and move you on all day because there aint nowhere to park all these cabs.Doh!
I would say our daytime takings on the rank have dropped 60%.I did the best part of 4 hours for £17 the other day-4 fares.Ramadan has been a killer but at least it's over now and all non muslims should be filling their boots today. It will be interesting to see how it levels out this next week.
Long shifts? We haven't got much choice if we want to provide for our families.
I was out at 04.40 to Manchester yesterday, then Heathrow at 12.30 then did a few hours in town until 01.30.Had a few hours rest along the way and probably drove 14 hours in total.Ordinarily wouldn't have gone into town but had a booking. But having lost around £4500 over the summer with the fire,a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do!
Regards
Steve

I don't except that some people have got to do 24 hour shifts. If the job is that bad then the answer is to either get another job or go on the dole. That may sound like a simplistic answer or harsh depending on your viewpoint but if a driver can't earn enough money in a reasonable time then he should change job.

Your forgetting the number of people who go into debt to buy new cabs.....should they let their home get repossessed too?

Who would be stupid enough to put their house up as security for a car!

Some people have got to do them Cap, like I mentioned in another post we've got drivers sleeping in their cars in the ASDA car park because they dearn't go home because they've took nothing. This has only come about after the local drips at the Council offices decided to de-regulate before that there weren't any drivers sleeping in their cars they were all off home at 4-5am with a decent take in their bags, now days they are lucky to take a a quarter of what they used to take.

There's only one place you can look to for answers and that's the local Council offices.

Seems a bit of an contradiction really..A council De Regulates and they get a flood of new Cabs as well as the existing cabs chasing the same amount of work, now you would think that more Cabs would mean drivers work less hours to service that finite amount of work, yet in real terms it actually means many more drivers working longer hour in the vain hope that they are going to find that work.

quite an Enigma that one.

Why does it seem like a contradiction?? Extra cabs chasing the same amount of work is going to lead to less earnings, ours has increased from 43 to over 100, the work hasn't increased, if any its dropped off, then we've got PH and Hackneys plated in other districts working on our circuits taking our money.

Yesterday I worked from 6am till 10pm and I took £74, not bad for a Saturday is it?? Take out fuel and running costs and I was left with £48, not bad for a 16 hour shift is it? Divide that by 16 and it leaves me earning £3 an hour.....wonderful.

Yesterday I worked from 10 pm until 4 am. I took £175. 2 booked jobs and the rest off the street. Our area is not restricted. The car is mine, the plate is mine, (no value) and I choose what hours to work. I don't go out when I know there is no work to be had I sit at home and post on forums.

Im in agreement..thats why its a contradiction on behalf of the councils attitude to de regulation on the one hand and drivers working long hours on the other...it could be avoided to a certain extent by the council if they regulated rather than de regulated..

It could be avoided easier if councils made it harder to get a taxi driver's licence. Too many councils dish them out to anyone who can fill in the form (and some who cant)
