Is that so? :?

As Churchill (the hound, not the great statesman) would say, "Oh, yes!"

When did that change then?

I thought if you presented a new motor you got a new plate.

When did they do the last survey?

It changed on 16th October 2008 & the last survey was done in late 2007 / early 2008.

It was all posted on here in the form of council papers, agendas etc.

The best laugh though is that plate values were far greater when they were still issuing new plates than they are now with the moratorium on issuing new plates still in force.

Don't worry; my guess is that they will start issuing new plates again within the next year or so.

It's only a temporary thing. The council really want more plates out so that the city centre is further F*cked Up with cabs everywhere.

Don't forget that some years ago Brum abolished Christmas & called it Winterval.

The only other case of Christmas being abolished was under Hitler, who did it because he did not want the birth of a Jewish Jesus being celebrated. He even went as far as changing the words of Christmas Carols to reflect the winter season - snow, frost & the like - as opposed to the birth of Jesus Christ & to this day Germans who are not church going still sing Hitler's Christmas Carols, without knowing any different, whereas Christian worshippers sing Christian lyrics to the same tunes.

Any chance of a list of these carols?

They're in German.

I watched a TV programme about two months ago that touched on this subject.

That's how I know; I think it might have been on the Yesterday channel.

Absolutely NOT!!!!

There is a DUAL LICENSING arrangement between Birmingham & Solihull, whereby Hackney cabs that are licensed by one council may have a second licence from the other council.

Strict criteria apply, as I have just found out myself recently, as I will be applying to Solihull to have my new cabs licensed by them too, as well as being Birmingham licensed.

The driver of a dual licensed Hackney cab must have HCDLs from both councils, or if he has only one, must employ a driver that has a HCDL from the other council.

The same plying & standing for hire laws apply as do through national legislation, but there are two ranks, both private property, where Hackneys from both councils are allowed to stand & ply for hire. These are the NEC & the airport.

That may come, but if it does my guess is that the authorities are on a looser.

Birmingham, don't forget, whilst being the second largest populated city in the UK, also has the smallest or one of the smallest city centres in the country, with an city ring road that is extremely tight & is about 2½ miles long; that's all. There are only two roundabouts & one circus on the ring road.

Now in the past when they have enforced over-ranking & moved the cabs on, the night shift drivers get called out & there is a mass plying for hire exercise around the city ring road.

This very quickly screws up the city's road network, with tail backs on all main routes coming into the city, including Spaghetti Junction.

With a few 'pseudo minor bumps' thrown in for good measure, where cab drivers are exchanging details in the middle of the road, chaos rapidly ensues & is further componded by driver's family members who have been bought out by the 'called to battle night shift drivers' & all wearing a pre-arranged coloured scarf or hanky, suddenly hailing cabs all over the ring road, only to be dropped off a couple of blocks down the road to hail another passing cab.

It's all good fun & have I had a good laugh in the past when this anti-exercise has taken place.

Bring it on I say!!!

At the Hackney Carriage Trade Liaison meeting on Monday 22nd this week, we were told that a new survey had been commisioned & would be taking place shortly.

We were not told when that survey would commence, nor which company had been commissioned to do it.

We were all taken aback a little with the sudden announcement, so much so that we all forgot to ask what criteria applied to the survey.

That's a phone call I will be making today.

So if I got a plate from unrestricted Solihull, restricted Birmingham would allow that vehicle to be plated? :-k

If you restrict then a survey is a must, quite surprised you were surprised. :?

And how can a survey assess SUD, when a vehicle could be doing another councils own SUD. :?

Only if you transferred an existing vehicle licence onto it, as there is a moratorium at present on the issue of new HCVL.

And thinking about it, that might be a little complicated.

We had for over a year asked for a new survey, but had not been given any encouragement on the subject.

Don't get me wrong, we're pleased, but still amazed that it had all been signed, sealed & commisioned without our knowledge.

We were also advised that we would not be told at this time who the company doing the survey was, nor when it would be starting.

Oversupply of taxis at New Street Station was discussed on Radio WM yesterday.

Follow this link;

Click on to 'Listen now' under the date 23/02/2010 & then slide the elapsed time slider along until it shows 1.01.59 as the time elapsed & listen.
