It's because they can't come up to the standards (here they are high) required to afford the investment, hence 129 H/C and 236 PH that illegally try to ply for hire, that is why they want H/C plates!!

Here we have the same required standards regardless (high standard throughout). It is only a matter of choice which vehicle you drive, hence the reason why the HC's here work the PH systems. It would appear that the investment that they obviously didn't consider too high is indeed too high and is not making the returns they thought they would. We only have 230 odd HC's (although there were originally as high as 400) and somewhere around 1200 PH. Whilst we're on the subject of illegally plying for hire could somebody refresh my memory and tell me exactly where a HC has to be to ply for hire?

Taxi rank?

Sorry Toots, to me PH will always mean "pirate hire" as that what they originally were..... It's unfortunately here to stay regardless of the fact that they do not have to comply to the DDA or EA and the same applies to saloons with "ice cream" signs on top pretending to be "taxi's" that are still allowed to ply their trade as H/C's....
As I have said before, if we have to accept that PH are here to stay, there is now no excuse for there to be so called "choice" for different kinds of disability in the H/C trade as it is now so easy to phone for a "choice" amongst the PH trade as there are so many of them. I will acknowledge that there are some in the PH trade that do provide wav's, bearing in mind there are now wav's that do cater for most disabilities (short of an ambulance!), sadly not PH here.....
I personally believe that both trades have a long way to go before it becomes a level playing field for all concerned, which I doubt I will see in my time. :-|

I would say that it has to be within it's own licensing area.

Thought so, so it's not outside every available pub, club, restaurant, shop etc etc that they deem fit then. I think there are too many with double standards to be slagging each part of the trade off, don't you?

Before 1847 surely all was 'pirate hire' :? There are as many in the HC trade as in the PH trade that flout the law and regulations, except for me of course, I polish my halo every morning and every evening O:)

I thought each Taxi & Private Hire Licensing department had to be self financing which is why the Private Hire would need to pay towards the taxi marshals.

Just because the licensing department shouldn't be subsidised by the general council tax doesn't mean the PH trade should subsidise the taxi trade.

Looking at it from another angle, why the f**k should hacks pay towards the enforcement of private hire illegally plying for hire ( or lack of it in most cases).

But by enforcing licensing conditions they are ensuring taxi drivers are better off, so in that case the cab trade should pay their bit.

Unlike taxi marshalling which has nothing to do with PH.

Any council that uses PH licensing fees to pay part of the cost of taxi marshalling will find themselves being told off by the courts, the ombudsman and the district auditor.

And quite rightly too.

Where is your evidence that taxi marshals stop PH picking up illegally?

And who gets the bill if the illegal pick ups are done by unlicensed vehicles or out of town cabs?

And who decided on who has done the illegal pick ups? :?

Let's face it, if the great majority of PH around the country abided by their conditions of licence in this respect instead of flying the 'skull & crossbones', there would be little need for marshalls.

I think you may find that marshals are to help keep order at ranks and to prevent 'proper taxis' from cherry picking. That's not to say some ph don't indeed fly the flag as do some 'proper taxis' when they're out of area

Well done Toots, at least one of us knows what taxi marshals are there for.

To make sure the queue is in order, to stop scum getting into cabs, and to ensure punters aren't being screwed by some cabs drivers.

In the case of the Southampton cab driver, literally.

Why would PH have to pay for rank marshalls?

Why would PH fares have to increase?

When I work on Friday or Saturday nights, I work Sutton Coldfield rank. This rank is marshalled.

A PH company called Hot Line is licensed by Walsall, with offices on the Walsall side of the boundary road that divides Birmingham & Walsall . . . how convenient!!!

There offices are just under 3 miles away from the Sutton rank. There car & PH licensed by Birmigham are constantly parking on the cab rank when HC drivers have not moved up quickly enough & obstruct the front & rear of the rank constantly throughout the night.

The marshalls are for ever moving them on, but sometimes they won't even move, so the Police have to be called. This situation is magnified throughout Brum on most nights, but especially on Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays. I have now started taking photos of these incidents & emailing them to the LO's office.

Oh, and by the way . . . there is only one HC taxi rank in Sutton Coldfield, but the council pay for 4/5 marshalls in Sutton. Two marshalls work on the official rank & the others work on the unofficial PH RANK outside Rosie's night club, on a public road, at the other end of the town, where PH are allowed to 'rank up' & pick up immediate hire passengers, who have NOT pre-booked. This arrangement is with the FULL blessing of the council's LO & police.

So to summarise, at one end of Sutton Coldfield the marshalls move the PH off the official taxi rank, while at the other end of the town they allow them to form an illegal PH rank on a public highway & marshall it!!

That's Barmy Brum for you!!!

I bet it's different in your area, hence your request for evidence & proof.

If im PRIVATE hire why do the council force me to carry a big yellow door sign which (through beer goggles) actually says "taxi" to every drunk outside a pub or nightclub when the same council wouldnt require the door signs if i spent twice as much and bought an "executive" car (merc/jag)

If i wanted the attention of Mr and Mrs Pukeworthy outside Ratface (Ratfaeces?) club id have bought a "taxi"......

(why would PH rise 500% to cover a plate rise of £200 unless i only did 2 jobs a year?)
